Previously departed family members include maternal grandfather James Powell, maternal grandmother Sun Cha Powell and paternal grandfather Paul Ulrich. She is survived by mother Caroline Powell Ulrich (Larry Penland), father Michael Ulrich and paternal grandmother Jane Ulrich along with aunts, uncles, cousins and bonus brothers.
Ashlyn’s life was full of love, happiness, joy and endless adventures. She was an Ardrey Kell High School graduate and belonged to the Friend’s Club. Ashlyn spent her time enjoying singing, acting, socializing with friends, athletics, arts and crafts, cheerleading, camps, going to the movies, traveling and dancing in fancy, sparkly dresses. She also spent time volunteering and donating time to numerous charitable organizations. Ashlyn also participated in Friends for Special Needs, Carmel Baptist Joy Class, Skills Group, Young Life, DSAGC, Therapeutic Rec, Special Olympics, the YMCA and Rainbow Express
Ashlyn had many accomplishments including being a gold, silver and bronze Special Olympian Medalist in Ice Skating for NC and the US Southeastern Region, Special Olympian Medalist in track and field, Green/White belt in Taekwondo, cheerleading for the Carolina Panthers Challenger League and featured on a Times Square Billboard for the National Down Syndrome Society.
Ashlyn was born with a heart defect and during an attempted surgical correction at one year of age, unknowingly suffered a catastrophic cardiac event that was not discovered until the age of twenty-two. Given this condition, every day of Ashlyn’s life was a miraculous gift that only could have been given by God, according to her medical team.
On her last earthly day, Ashlyn lived her fullest and absolute best life. She spent the day with friends, went to a dance class and was joyful and exuberant with a bright smile on her face. In the afternoon, while at home with her family, God decided it was time for her to come Home and her broken heart stopped and then in a whisper, she was shining bright with the angels. While sudden and so sad for those missing her, we are comforted by God’s perfect timing.
We should all take a page from Ashlyn’s story and live with love in your heart, compassion for others, hopeful in the grace of God and a pure, joyful love of life.
