Arthur Vernon Flynn, Jr. died May 7, 2021. He was born in Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina on August 7, 1934 to Arthur and Nell Flynn. He was preceded in death by his sister Jane Revis of Asheville.
Vernon retired from the Federal Government after 30 years of service in 1988. During that time he was an administrative officer with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Army. He also retired from the Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel with over 30 years of active reserve time. He served as Chairman of the Awards Committee for the North Carolina Employer Support for Guard and Reserve with the Department of Defense. The Flynns served as foster parents to 38 different children over an 11 year period.
After retirement, Vernon served as a volunteer in the Better Business Bureau Arbitration program and was selected as Arbitrator of the Year in 1997. He also served with the AARP Tax Aide Program as an instructor and tax preparer. Vernon was also Chief Judge at his Election Precinct.
Vernon graduated from Berea College in 1956 and served on the Alumni Council for five years.
Vernon is survived by his loving wife Barbara of 43 years. Children Mark (Renee’), Natalie, Nadine Smith (Brian) and Kris (Susan). Vernon had six grandchildren, Sam and Andy Flynn, Megan and Melissa Smith and Liam and Evan Flynn.
