Alice Richardson Allen, 89, passed away July 11, 2017 at her daughter’s home after a year of declining health. Alice was born in Indian Trail NC, the youngest child of the late Jesse and Nellie Blythe Richardson. She was married to the late John Millard Allen for 46 years.
Alice spent her adult life in Charlotte, where she retired from Union Carbide Corporation and spent several years employed by Atlantic Design Company. Alice was a strong and independent woman. After her husband’s death in 1998 she lived on her own for 18 years until last year. She was the perfect mother and grandmother - always ready with cookies to bake, books to read, stories to tell, recipes to pass down and most importantly, a soft lap and loving hug. She will be greatly missed by all who love her.
In addition to her parents and husband, Alice was predeceased by her siblings Ruby Richardson Long, Nell Richardson Thomas, Wilson, Marvin and W.J. “Dub” Richardson.
Alice is survived by her son, Johnny Allen and his wife Jeannene; her daughter, Jill Allen Atwell and her husband Stan; her granddaughters, Claire Atwell and Hayley Atwell; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
The funeral will be private for family. To honor her memory, her children ask that you follow Alice’s example by talking with family and making end-of-life decisions; this eases the burden of making difficult decisions and gives your loved ones the peace of mind that comes with keeping a promise. Condolences can be made at online at www.forestlawnwest.com.
The family would like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro for helping us keep our promise to our mother. The end of her life was spent pain-free in familiar surroundings eating ice cream and watching Andy Griffith or The Golden Girls. When the time came she was with people who loved her, and was able to die the way she lived - on her own terms.
