Charlotte - Alex died on Friday, April 25, 2014, at the age of 87, after a brief illness. A Charlotte native, Alex was born on November 25, 1926 to Blanche Yandell Haughton and Alexander Andrews Haughton, Sr., who were also both Charlotte natives.
He graduated from Central High School and thereafter served in the United States Navy. Upon his return from the service, he enrolled at The Citadel. Following his freshman year he transferred to UNC at Chapel Hill where he graduated. At Carolina, he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Upon graduation, he entered the family business, joining his father as a stock broker in 1952 at the firm of Abbott, Proctor and Paine. For the next 62 years he worked at this firm, which through several subsequent mergers became UBS Financial Services, Inc. With over 60 continuous years of service, Alex was one of the longest serving employees of UBS Financial Services anywhere in the world. Alex's deep love of his profession was captured in a note he received during his recent illness from one of his colleagues that implored him to "hurry up and get back to work!" Outside of work, Alex's favorite hobby was collecting and working on 60's and 70's sports cars and classic cars.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Paula "Polly" Kiser Haughton and his brother, Gerald L. Haughton. Alex is survived by his son, Alexander "Alex" Andrews Haughton, III; his sisters, Bettie McLaughlin and her husband Ted and Patricia McAlister and her husband John; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Harry and Bryant Funeral Home, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, on Wednesday, April 30 at 11 a.m.
