Charles L. Vance, Sr., 85, of Charleston, passed away on Friday, March 13. He was the son of Jesse Lee and Mary Catherine Vance. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Jeanie Vance, and brothers Russell and William Vance. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice Hunt Vance, brother Harry (Berneda) Vance, brother-in-law Richard Hunt, sister-in-law Wilma Vance, his children Mary Vance (Charles) Simmons, Charles (Gayle) L. Vance, Jr., John T. Vance, Elaine Vance Landon, 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1946. He served in the Naval Reserves, worked at Union Carbide, and spent the remainder of his career as an Agent for the Kansas City Life Insurance Company. He volunteered at the Canaan UMC Food Pantry. He was especially proud of his participation and service throughout his life with the Boy Scouts of America. He was one of the Scout Masters of Troop 71 at Wesley UMC and was presented with The Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor achieved in Scouting. Funeral service will be held at noon, Saturday, March 21, at Wilson Funeral Home, 420 Lee St. West Charleston, with Pastor Johnna Russo officiating. Burial will follow at Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney. Friends may join the family one hour prior to the service.
