Maxwell Arthur Black Jr. was born on August 25, 1928 to Eva and Maxwell Black Sr. in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. He had no siblings. He lived in Waynesboro all his life and graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1946. Two years later Max married his high school sweetheart, Lois Graham on August 28, 1948. Their son Greg, was born in 1949.
In 1948, Max began his apprenticeship in refrigeration for the Frick Company in Waynesboro, PA and expanded his career to include the following: draftsman, field erector, application engineer, estimator, sales engineer and branch sales manager. Max continued working with the Frick Company and in 1969 he received a promotion as Vice President of Sales, which meant a move to Los Angeles, California. In 2001, Max made the decision to retire and moved to a new home in the Sun Lakes retirement community, where he and Lois could live near their son. Max and Lois attended Chandler Christian Church and were members for several years. Max loved to golf and he enjoyed traveling, attending plays, comedy shows, dinner theatre, concerts, dining out and listening to jazz music. His favorite activity was planning trips and traveling. Together, he and Lois visited 76 countries. Tahiti was his favorite and in 2009 at the age of 80, he parasailed 80 feet up in the air! He loved it and spoke of that experience often.
In November of 2017 Max and Lois made the decision to move into assisted living and in 2018 they celebrated their 70th anniversary with family and friends.
Max is survived by his son Greg and daughter-in-law Janet: Chandler, AZ; 3 grandchildren: Corey Black: Oklahoma, Jeff Black: Virginia, Lisa Black: California; 3 great-grandchildren: Rachel, Thomas and Andrew: Oklahoma. Also extended family members and many friends…..
Max requested that there be no funeral services. His ashes will be spread with his wife’s by family members as they planned together.
Max will be remembered by his quick wit and great sense of humor. His voice, despite his stature, was distinct and bold. His laugh….unforgettable. He had a genuine interest in everyone he met. His smile brightened any room. He was respectful, kind, gentle and generous. He will be deeply missed by all of those who loved him.
Finally he is with Jesus and the love of his life, Lois. Pappy, your absence leaves a hole we can never fill. We miss and love you. Dad, we will see you again when we all celebrate in Heaven together.
