John Angelo Polloni of Sun Lakes, AZ, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 9, 2015. John was born in Rockport, Massachusetts in 1932 to Peter and Ruth (Zettergren) Polloni, the second of four children. He grew up in Sandwich, Massachusetts on Cape Cod, and graduated from Henry T. Wing High School in 1950. Soon after graduation he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the Navy, and graduated from Northeastern Bible College in New Jersey with a degree in Missions. He married his longtime sweetheart Margaret “Ann” MacKilligan in 1958.
For most of their married lives, John and Ann were missionaries with Trans World Radio, serving in Bonaire (Netherland Antilles), Chatham, NJ, and Cary, NC. John retired after more than 25 years with Trans World Radio, and they settled in Plymouth, MA, and finally in Sun Lakes, AZ. Retirement did not slow John down, because his first love was serving God by serving others. During retirement John took on such roles as HOA President, serving with Senior Ministries, and singing in his church choir at The First Baptist Church of Sun Lakes, even right up until weeks before his death. He had a unending love for God, family, and sports, and was a lifelong fan of the Patriots, Red Sox, and Celtics, much to the chagrin (and loving entertainment) of his New York-raised grandson. He loved gardening, reading history, shooting baskets with his grandchildren, and watching sports with his family.
John is survived by his wife of 56 years Margaret “Ann” (MacKilligan) Polloni; daughter Jeanne (husband Thomas) Bookhout of Phoenix, AZ; son James Polloni of Roselle, NJ; grandchildren Katrina (husband Chad) Wilhoite, Tracy Bookhout, and Matthew Bookhout; and great-granddaughter Emilie Wilhoite. John also is survived by siblings Eleanor Lynch and family of Lake City, SC; Peter Polloni and family of Hatfield, PA; Chris Polloni and family of North Falmouth, MA; and over 20 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 31, at The First Baptist Church of Sun Lakes, AZ. His remains will rest at the Massachusetts National Cemetery at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be directed to Camelback Christian School (3900 E. Stanford Dr., Paradise Valley, AZ 85253) where John loved to volunteer.
