Catherine Marie Newman

Catherine Marie Newman - passed away on June 3, 2014 while enjoying life and adventure with her husband rafting through the Grand Canyon. She was a loving, nurturing mother to children Taira and Geoff, and a caring and supporting partner to her husband, Gary, for nearly 27 years. Born on August 1, 1959 in Michigan, Cathy grew up in Amarillo, Texas, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from Texas Tech University, and lived in Arlington, TX, Seattle, WA and Phoenix, AZ. Her smiles, laughter, enthusiasm and encouragement touched many lives, including family, friends, co-workers and acquaintances. Cathy freely gave her time and energy to coach girls' volleyball and lead fund-raising auctions for the Waldorf Schools in Seattle and Phoenix. In addition to her immediate family, she is survived by her mother, Joanne Alder, her father, Richard Alder, and siblings, Rick, Mark, David, Paul and Teresa Altherr. A Memorial Service is planned for 1:30 PM Friday, June 13, 2014 at Valley of the Sun Mortuary and Cemetery, 10940 E. Chandler Heights Road, Chandler, AZ 85248. In lieu of flowers, dontations in Catherine's memory to one or more of the following are encouraged: Planned Parenthood; National Organization for Women; NPR.
