Virginia Sarah Serigne Steele passed away peacefully on Monday, March 20, 2022 at the age of 98. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some way throughout her life. She was the cherished wife of the late Henry H. Steele Jr. Loving mother of Henry H. Steele III (Marlene), Monica S. Mize (Teddy) and the late Ethel Alphonso (Jack) and David Steele. Sister of Irene Melerine, Gloria Stephenson and the late Adam Serigne, O’Neil Serigne, Joseph Serigne and Lionel Serigne. Grandmother of Henry H. Steele IV, Elizabeth Forjet, David Mize, Teddy Mize III, Adam Mize, Christine Ferry, Jack Alphonso Jr. and the late Jason Steele. Great grandmother of Brooke Steele, Marissa Steele, Brian Forjet Jr., Logan Forjet, Mercedes Mize, Adam D. Mize, Emma Mize, Caleb Ferry, Corinne Ferry, Claire Ferry, Emmett Alphonso and Elijah Alphonso. Great-great grandmother of Emry Steele. She is also survived and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Virginia was born in Plaquemines Parish and was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish. She enjoyed delivering meals and volunteering with the St. Bernard Council on Aging and later enjoyed a long career and retired from the St. Bernard Parish school system. She found pleasure in the details of everyday life and caring deeply for others. She was well loved and will be deeply missed by her family and by all those whose lives she touched.
Special thanks to Virginia’s caretaker Debra Stevenson who catered to her every need. Also to her neighbor Shakeith Ashby for always making sure she had a hot meal.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Friday, March 25th from 11:00AM – 1:00PM, followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2621 Colonial Blvd, Violet, LA beginning at 2:00PM. She will be laid to eternal rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery.
