Joe Edd Johnson, Sr. surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the age of 93 in Madisonville, LA. Devoted husband of the late Lois E. Melerine Johnson for 70 years. Father of Sharon Ruiz (Brien), Dr. Joy Kenny, Dr. Joe E. Johnson, Jr. MD (Colleen), Kim Morales (Todd), and John Johnson (Renee). Grandfather of eleven grandchildren, Brock Smith (Rachel), Sean Kenny (Christina), Victoria Bagot JD (Mike), Christina Smith JD (Peyton), Matthew Johnson (Lindsey), Kaitlyn Morales, Kerilyn St. Pierre (Jacob), Hunter Morales, and Corey, Ryan, and Mark Johnson, and great-grandfather of nine, Beatrice Smith, Audrey, Michael IV, Harrison, and Anders Bagot, Evangeline, Clarkson, and Casler Smith, and Wesley Johnson. Also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Joe was born in Hurley, VA and was the son of the late Harvey Oscar "Burk" Johnson, Sr. and Elizabeth "Betty" Smith Johnson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War.
He lived in Meraux, LA for 42 years where he worked for Kaiser Aluminum in Chalmette for 25 years and then for St. Bernard Parish for 10 years before retiring- After Hurricane Katrina he relocated to Madisonville, LA, and resided there for 18 years. He loved to be outdoors woodworking, painting, and building projects. He was an avid gardener and could be found planting in his vegetable garden, flower garden, or various fruit trees in his backyard. He was a self-taught guitarist and enjoyed playing his guitar and listening to country music.
In addition to his parents and beloved wife Lois, Joe was preceded in death by his 14 siblings: Nora Summerford, Jane Smith, Edward "Brother" Johnson, Addie Blanche Riekoff Burke Johnson Jr., twins- Richard Johnson and Betty Jean Kiser, Mary Helen Wescott, twins- Patton Johnson and Lois "Jenny Ann" Kennedy, Carma Johnson, Emma Mae "JoBill" McCoy, Randy Morris Johnson, Sr., and Dale Johnson.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Tuesday, April 30th, 2024, at OUR LADY OF
LOURDES CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2621 COLONIAL BLVD., in Violet, from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM. A Mass will be held in honor of Joe at 12:00 PM. He will be laid to eternal rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery.
