Geraldine Gallardo Avenel

Geraldine Gallardo Avenel, age 90, died peacefully Saturday, January 4, 2025. She is preceded in death by her husband, Albert Joseph Avenel Sr., parents, Frank "Finky" Gallardo and Emily Romano Gallardo, and her brother Frank "Buddy" Gallardo. She is survived by her sons, Albert Joseph Avenel, Jr. (Elizabeth) and Gary James Avenel (Kathleen); grandchildren, Melissa Avenel, Albert J. Avenel III (Amber), Margaret Avenel (Austin), Luke Avenel (Abby), Samuel Avenel, Mary Avenel, and great-grandsons Elijah James Nicaud, Albert Joseph Avenel IV, Alexander James Avenel and one arriving in April.

Geraldine wasa graduate of Arabi High School, class of 1954. She enjoyed a life full of caring for others, as a homemaker, substitute teacher, volunteer and friend. She enjoyed traveling over the years in support of her beloved husband Albert as he fulfilled duties related to his positions with the US Steelworker’s Union and the St. Bernard Parish School Board.

Geraldine was an active parishioner of San Pedro and St. Bernard Catholic Church, and received the order of St. Louis Medal. She also had leadership roles throughout the church, helping to organize and run the annual blessing of the fleet for many years. Later in life she relished her time spent with friends at the St. Bernard Council on Aging (COA) and AARP group outings.

Geraldine, known by many as "Aunt Gerry", was a very loving, kind, and proud wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 2805 Bayou Rd., St. Bernard, LA on Friday January 10, 2025 from 10:00 am -12:00 noon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon. She will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery.
