Daniel “Dan” S. Caluda Sr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at the age of 88. He was the beloved husband of Mercedes V. Caluda. Loving father of Janice Caluda Perdue (Preston), Danny Caluda (Jodie), Linda Caluda Jackson and Connie Caluda Brown (Mike). Brother of Roselyn Fernandez (Tony), Gaynel Parker (Mac) and Gerald Caluda. He is also survived and fondly remembered by his 9 grandchildren, & 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Angelo and Hazel Caluda; his brothers, Charles and Marion Caluda; and his dear grandson Jonathan Caluda.
Born in Braithwaite, LA, Dan embodied the values of community, hard work, and family. He was a longtime resident of Braithwaite, LA, where he laid down roots and became an integral part of the community. He proudly served his country in the National Guard Reserves. In addition to his military service, Dan was as the Director of the Lake Borgne Basin Levee District, where he played a role in protecting the parish from the ever-present threat of flooding.
Beyond his public service, Dan was a part owner of the Hi Lan Food Store, where he worked diligently to provide for his family. He brought joy and laughter into the lives of those around him. He delighted in entertaining his children and friends with his famous finger removal trick. Dan was a man who found happiness in life's simple pleasures, whether it was sharing a meal with loved ones, enjoying a quiet evening on the porch, or sharing stories and jokes with friends. His 68-year marriage to his beloved wife, Mercedes, was a shining example of enduring love and devotion.
As we mourn the loss of Dan, let us also celebrate the rich and meaningful life he led. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to us all.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at OUR LADY OF LOURDES CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2621 Colonial Dr., Violet, LA on Monday, September 11th from 9:30AM – 12:00PM, followed by a Mass in Dan’s memory beginning at 12:00PM. He will be laid to eternal rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite charity in memory of Dan.
