Matt was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Larry R. Carter of Bessemer and Billy H. Tucker of Six Mile; paternal great-grandparents, Frank & Mildred Miller of Demopolis, and Nina & Joe Summerlin of Demopolis; maternal great-grandparents, Bob & Kate Bain of Bluff Ridge, and Bud & Ethel Carter Bessemer.
He is survived by his mother, Tara Carter Barger of Centreville; father, Travis Wayne Barger of Millers Ferry; brother, Gunnar W. R. Carter of Denver, Colorado; sister, Kelly Marie Barger of Newbern; maternal grandmother, Joan Bain “Meemie” Tucker of Centreville; paternal grandparents, Sonny & Suzanne Barger of Millers Ferry; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and brothers and sisters in Christ.
His love of anything sports led him to play in several leagues - growing up, he played soccer, baseball, golf, and football; he played baseball for Demopolis youth baseball and Demopolis High School, golf for Demopolis High School and football for Demopolis Middle and High School. He inherited his artist skills from his father and could sketch most anything that he saw. Matt also had a great love for music and with the help and influence of his close friends, Tyler Joiner and Phillip Shipp, he learned to play guitar.
His greatest pleasure in life was the time he spent with his family. His brother, Gunnar, was his biggest hero and he spoke often of him and all that he has accomplished; his love for him was like no other, often bringing tears to Matt’s eyes when he spoke of him. His sister, Kelly, was a rainbow in his life; keeping his spirit lifted even when life was hard. He loved his “Minnie-me” and was so proud of all that she was accomplishing.
Matthew was a very big Auburn fan, he loved his Tigers and supported and rooted for them whether win or lose.
“Matthew was an optimist with very large opinions about life. He had a particular way of looking at facts, & people. Especially, people. He knew who he was & he found comfort in that, never changing who he was to fit anyone’s desires. He supported his friends. All of their dreams & ambitions. He was everyone’s biggest fans… “He adored his brother & was so proud of, Gunnar & everything he was growing into. He loved his momma, deep down he was always a little mommas boy. He cherished his family.” - contributed by Sierra Daniele Chapman
