Sherry Louise (Lord) Thompson, 73, beloved wife, mother, neighbor and friend, passed from this life to be with her Lord on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022, due to complications resulting from a broken hip and a long, hard-fought battle with congestive heart failure.
Born June 30, 1949, in Centreville, Ala., she was the cherished only child of M.E. and Dorothy (Davis) Lord. After graduating Auburn University in 1972 – WAR EAGLE!! – she moved to Columbus, Ga., where she worked at Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. It was in Columbus that she would meet the man who would become her husband, Jonathan Thompson, on a blind date. The two fell in love, married in 1974, and moved to New York City. From there they moved to East Grand Rapids, Mich., and then to Manchester, Conn., where they would live for 30 years. While in Connecticut, she reentered the workforce, with jobs at Manchester Public Library and Gerber Coburn. In 2015, after several years of being snowbirds, Jon and Sherry returned permanently to Centreville.
Along the way, Sherry gave birth to three children – Dorothy, Michael and Christopher. They were the lights of her life. She wanted nothing more than to see them happy.
Sherry was one of the sweetest, most wonderful people to ever walk this Earth. Anyone who was fortunate enough to have her in their life is better for having known her. She will be deeply, deeply missed.
She leaves to forever mourn her passing her husband of 48 years, Jon, of Centreville, Ala.; her three children, Dorothy and Michael of Manchester, Conn., and Christopher of North Hollywood, Calif.; her brother-in-law, Timothy Thompson of Malden, Mass.; several cousins, especially Talice Mullen and Rulene Manuel of Dothan, Ala.; and legions of friends in both Connecticut and Alabama – including her beloved “blood sister,” Leigh Dembowski.
She was predeceased by her parents and all the pets she'd owned and loved over the years – particularly her precious beagle Polly.
The family would like to thank Druid City Hospital (DCH) of Tuscaloosa, especially its cardiac ICU; Stacy Jones and the DCH cardiac rehab center; Optum Infusion; Amedysis Home Health; and especially Dr. George Hemstreet and CRNP Jeremy Kelley of Alabama Vascular and Heart.
The family would also like to thank the Rev. Ken Fuller of Centreville Baptist Church.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Centreville Baptist Church, followed by a funeral at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at a later date, at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Centreville Baptist Church, 138 Ct. Square East, Centreville, AL 35042; North United Methodist Church, 300 Parker St., Manchester, CT 06042; Brent-Centreville Public Library, 20 Library St., Centreville, AL 35042; or Atlanta Beagle Rescue, the organization that provided her with her sweet Polly, at atlantabeaglerescue.org.
We'll love you forever, Mom.
