April Fay Rutty was welcomed home by her parents on Tuesday, August 23 after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. A lifelong resident of Old Saybrook, she was born December 16, 1942 to the late Kenneth Swain and Elizabeth Kelsey. April worked her entire life, from the early years at Saybrook Laundry to her final ones at Greenwald Industries. As the wife of a commercial fisherman, April also was the lifemate and partner of Reginald "Butch" Rutty for the past 51 years. She leaves behind a daughter, Gloria Berner of Killingworth; a son, Butch Rutty and his wife Anita of Old Saybrook; and a sister Frances Swain of Holyoke, Massachusetts. April will be greatly missed by her three beloved grandsons Ben Berner of Miami, Florida and Ken and Kevin Rutty of Old Saybrook. The loss to her extended family and friends is immeasurable - especially to her brother and sisters in laws and their children.
April had a passion for life and lived each day to its fullest measure. She treasured time with family and friends - especially the annual Memorial Day picnic and fish fry. She had a passion for fishing, country music, and NASCAR. For quiet time, she enjoyed time at her goldfish pond - listening to the water, watching the fish, and enjoying her garden. April loved spending time at the casino either playing bingo or taking her chances at the slot machines. Family and friends are invited to celebrate April's life Friday, August 26th at 5pm at the VFW hall in Old Saybrook. Donations in the memory of April may be made to Hospice at Middlesex Memorial Hospital, 60 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457.
