To Lydia Long's extended family:  Very sorry for your loss.  We knew Lydia Long from sharing her loss many years ago when she lost her son, Gordon while he was serving in the Army overseas.  Gordon was my paperboy at one time while I lived in Denver.  After his passing, I kept in touch with Lydia each year via a visit or by mail as myself and family moved from Colorado.  Many good years of updates and communication.  Her kindness and humor will be missed.  She indeed was a good, hardy soul that like to keep active over the years.  We will miss her.

Gary and Vickie wish to convey our condolences to the entire.  I have know Lydia since 1966 and were neighbors since then.  I so remember when she would sit in front of the garage to get the sun.  May you all find peace and grand memories  of her.

Takuko Hawkins and Miko & George Dydek send our deepest sympathies to Lydia's family.

Takuko had known Lydia for many years since they were co-workers at the same company.  In addition,they shared a few things in common having both been spouses of soldiers in the Army. After both Lydia and Takuko retired, they maintained their friendship and had gone on monthly shopping trips together for groceries until just before Lydia's passing. Also, when Takuko had a day surgery a few years ago, Lydia was there to take her to the clinic, stay with her the whole time- as a couple of complications developed- and bring her home. For this, we'll remain forever grateful. The news of Lydia's passing comes to us with much surprise and sadness.

Lydia was also a good friend to me Miko (Takuko's daughter) and husband George. She always gave George the utmost respect for George's career choice as a military officer. In the 80s when we lived in Colorado, we had Lydia over several times for dinners; and after we left Colorado for other duty stations the get-togethers would be at Takuko's house when we returned "home" to Denver. We enjoyed her company and also admired her skiing ability-well into an age where many people have a difficult time just getting from the car into their house!

Here is the story of a life long friendship.
About 55 years ago I stood in line at Sach's Delicatessen on Broadway when a young lady and I began to talk. We realized that we had a lot in common including our middle name.  We followed our soldier husbands to the USA leaving our loving families, our childhood friends behind.
She in Berlin, I in Nuernberg. We came to a country we knew very little of.  We trusted the young men with whom we fell in love. But we knew that we would make it in this country. We were brave and full of enthusiasm to make the best of our situations.  
Lydia and I knew we had to become friends.  Our friendship that began in that Deli turned out to be a friendship for a lifetime. We raised our children, we took the best of  care of our families, we cooked great meals, we worked to add to the family budget. 
 Our two families  spent many wonderful times together, picnics in the mountains, New Year's Eve's parties in our house or Lydia's. Many Mardi Gras Parties. We didn't have much money but always enough to entertain friends and neighbors. We supported  German social clubs in the Denver area to keep our  heritage and customs alive for our children. We danced many a night away. 

When Chuck and I moved into the Conifer area, Lydia and her family came in Decembers to cut their Christmas tree on our property. We usually had snow and used our long driveway for sledding.
We spent many happy days together, also some sad ones. We confided in each other, consoling each other but mostly laughing with each other. She was such an optimistic woman. A rock.

Last time we saw each other a few months ago would you believe it: we met at a German Delicatessen in Cherry Creek to have coffee and cake We exchanged books, said good bye in the parking lot, hugged and promised that we will meet again soon. 
For a number of years we did not see each other in person as  much, but we were always in touch by phone and writing. Our conversations centered around our kids, grand kids and the good old days. And we laughed. 
I am so glad that she was able to spend time with her family in Berlin recently. She  and I talked about it and she knewit was important to go while her health allowed it.

Rest in peace Lydia-Marie, you dear, true friend. You will be missed by your friend Irmgard-Marie.
