Leonard "Len" David Lundberg

Leonard David Lundberg was born on November 28, 1924 in Gypsum, Colorado. Len’s father, Carl was born in Gotenburg, Sweden. He moved to the U.S. when he was 25. Len’s mother, Esther, was born in Norway and moved to Minnesota when she was very young.

The youngest of five children, Len spent a large part of his childhood helping his family on their farm chopping wood, bringing in coal, and milking cows (the chore he dreaded the most). Len learned to swim in Gypsum Creek and liked to go camping and fishing. Occasionally, he went deer hunting with his Dad and his dog, Rex.

Len’s high school had just thirteen kids in his graduating class. He had fun playing in his high school band and hanging out with his buddies. During the summers, he worked on a neighbor’s farm and at a gas station.

Len enlisted in the Air Force in the 1940’s and served in World War II, living in various places including India and Burma.

After the war Len worked for the Colorado State Patrol as a radar technician. He met Leila Dietz in Greeley, Colorado on a blind date and asked her to marry him three months later. They were married on October 26, 1952 and eventually moved to Littleton, Colorado. Later, he began working for Martin Marietta as an aerospace engineer. Len and Lee had three children, Lori, Lon and Lesli.

Len and Lee were avid Denver Bronco fans, having season tickets for many years. He often came home after a game with no voice from yelling and cheering so much. After more than three decades, Len retired from Martin Marietta and Len and Lee traveled a bit, enjoying a trip to Hawaii, a cruise through the Caribbean, a trip along the east coast, and a cruise through Alaska and Canada.

Len and Lee were long-time members of Grace Lutheran Church where Len served as an usher and on the church council. They joined Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in 1992.

Len was an accomplished electrician, craftsman, and carpenter. He loved to work on projects including finishing the basements of his homes, constructing an outdoor play-set for his kids, and helping his girls and sons-in-law with various household projects. If you had a tool that you needed to borrow, chances are Len had it in a very organized space in his workshop.

He was a loving husband and father to daughters Lori and Lesli, their husbands Neil and Brandon, and a proud grandfather to Jade, Lindsey, and Preston. He was preceded in death by his son, Lon, and his wife of 57 years, Leila, who passed away last year.
