Alice was born March 9, 1923, in Delavan, Illinois, one of seven siblings to Ray and Marguerite (Jenike) Lillibridge. Alice married Dean Edwin Zumwalt on October 28, 1945 at the First Presbyterian Church in Delavan, Illinois and Dean preceded Alice in death on October 12, 2007.
Dean and Alice have three children, all surviving: son James Gerald of Brentwood, Tennessee; son Gary Ray (and Anne) of Peoria; and daughter, Jan (and Arieh) Szigeti of Greenwood Village, Colorado. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and one sister, Donna Jean of Delavan and one brother, James Jerald of Seattle, Washington.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Ray, and three sisters, Ruth, Carolyn and Mary.
This amazingly effervescent go-getter, graduated from Delavan High School where she was a cheerleader supporting her future husband Dean, a star on the basketball team. She went on to college at Illinois Wesleyan and was active in school plays, a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and the President of Masquers, a local drama society. Following college, Alice taught fourth grade in Delavan, believing that it was a teacher’s responsibility to discover and encourage potential in each child, no matter their ability. She certainly instilled the same commitment with her own children, all of whom excelled in athletics and the arts. Alice set a great example along the way, winning trophies herself in golf and tennis. From her baptism until her passing, she was a member of the Delavan Presbyterian Church.
She was the ultimate hostess and her Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings legendary, with her home resplendently appointed for each and every season. With a heart as big as all outdoors, she extended warmth and compassion to everyone she met. Her beautiful blue eyes sparkled, danced and smiled, illuminating a bright inner light. Elegant, classy without pretense, and graceful – all qualities that were imbued in her radiant spirit and presence that so poignantly touched so many lives. She simply adored her friends and family.
Cremation has been accorded, and private family services will be held.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations can be made to Prairie Rest Cemetery in Delavan, Illinois or the charity of your choice.
