Michael Duffy was the “best Dad in the whole world,” and that’s exactly how he would want to be remembered. His serious nature was overruled by the joys of fatherhood, and he is remembered by his children as the dad who sang loudly, wrestled gently, laughed without restraint, and loved unconditionally. Michael passed away peacefully on the morning of April 18, 2024, in his home while recovering from a heart attack.
Michael Brian Duffy was born on October 4,1980 in Denver, Colorado to his adoring mom, Christine Marie Duffy, and his proud Dad, Kevin Brian Duffy. His parents were high school sweethearts, and when their blond-haired, blue-eyed son was born, their life’s purpose was clear.
Michael wanted to be a dad his whole life, and on November 9, 2009, when he held his bright-eyed daughter, Lyndy Martin Duffy, for the first time, his dreams came true. Lyndy was the light of her Dad’s life, and no Dad was ever prouder than Michael was of his daughter. Three years later, on January 25, 2013, Michael’s dreams got even bigger when he held his “best bro,” Connor Andrew Duffy. Legend has it they had their first “fist bump” that day. Michael is also survived by Lyndy and Connor’s mom, Molly Wells, and their Grandma “Moppy,” Wendy Martin.
Michael had a big life, though he was too humble to say it. Some say he followed his Dad’s footsteps into law enforcement; but that’s not the whole story. Michael followed his own path, his own inner-compass, and his own instincts from the time he was a little boy. He could tell you everything about — well, everything — and most of the time he was right. His mind worked unlike anyone his family had ever known. Life was a puzzle that he knew how to solve, and he walked through his life with certainty, logic, love, and compassion.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office lost a brother in Sergeant Michael Duffy. Michael began his career in Douglas County as a Deputy in Detentions in 2002 and transferred to Patrol in 2003. He was promoted to Corporal in 2019 and shortly thereafter, rose to the rank of Sergeant in 2021, and transferred as a Sergeant to Internal Affairs in 2023. He played an integral role in helping so many Douglas County families find peace and closure in the cases he worked on. Those closest to him say he was the best cop there was.
As a child, Michael was always seen with a ball in-hand, playing any sport he could find, though his truest love was football. Coached by his Dad and his Uncle Mike Gilmore, he played quarterback, and legend has it, he kicked his first long field goal at age eight. His baseball teammates called him “flash,” as he was known to run faster than everyone on his team. He went on to play varsity sports for three years of high school.
When a ball wasn’t in his hand, that’s because he was holding the hand of his sissy, Jami Lynne Duffy. Irish Twins, just 13 months apart, Michael and Jami adored each other, and were most certainly each other’s first friends.
Michael was loved by and will be missed by his entire family, which includes his four uncles, five living aunts and 17 adoring cousins. He is now surrounded by his loving departed family members, including his Grandpas Bernard Duffy and Jack Gilmore, his Grandmas Lynne Gilmore and Jean Duffy, and his Aunt Jacki, Aunt Patty and Aunt Shannon.
Michael’s memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on May 3, 2024 at Southeast Christian Church, 9560 Jordan Road, Parker, CO, 80123.
