Leland F. Hines, long-time resident of Glenwood Springs, passed away suddenly in Greeley, Colorado on May 2, 2012. He was born in Burlington, Colorado on November 18, 1937 to Wilbur Hines and Waunita Burd. In 1949 he moved with his stepfather, George Yarnell, mother, and six brothers to Kiowa, Colorado, where he graduated from high school. He served in the Marine Corps Reserves. In 1957 he married Laurel Skipton in Kiowa, Colorado. In 1958 he began working as a fitter serviceman with Public Service in Denver, Colorado and later transferred to Evergreen, Colorado where he worked until 1972. At that time he moved to Cedaredge, Colorado and went to work for Rocky Mountain Natural Gas in Delta, Colorado and Glenwood Springs, Colorado. After 25 years there he retired and moved to Elizabeth, Colorado to ranch and raise miniature Herefords. In 2005 he and Laurel moved to Greeley to be closer to family. He rarely sat still and was a jack of all trades. No one was a stranger and he generously helped anyone who asked. He had a particular soft spot for all animals and kids of all ages. He is survived by his wife Laurel, son John (Lee) of Marble, daughter, Hope (Burt) Glenwood Springs, granddaughters Brandi (Matt) Thompson, Greeley; Tara (Katie) Hines, Florida; Kathryn (Matt) Oja, Duluth, Minnesota; and Emma Waibel, Glenwood. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren: John, James, and Taylor and five brothers: Wilber of Fort Lupton, Mickey (Gerry) Montana, Donald (Ramona) Greeley, Larry (Ellen) Morrison, and George (Glenda) Elbert.
Memorial services are May 9 at 11:00 am at the Kiowa Community Church in Kiowa, Colorado. Olinger-Andrews Mortuary of Castle Rock is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers please donate to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice.
