A native of Wilson County, she was born in Wilson, NC on November 6, 1951 to William Herbert Walston and Mary Esther Page Walston. After finishing high school at Wilson Fike High School in 1970, she took her first job as a librarian with the Wilson City Library. She later moved to Greenville, NC beginning a long career as an admin with stints at East Carolina University, UNC Public TV, MCNC at the RTP, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and NC State University. While in Greenville, she met Jerry Gambill and they were married in Durham, NC on June 25, 1983. Jerry happily became a father to Sue’s daughter Caroline Peyton. On May 30, 1985, Sue and Jerry were blessed with the birth of daughter Emily Page, now Page Gambill Pfister.
In the years following their marriage, Sue made many lasting friendships where she lived and along her career path. She happily retired as a state employee in fall 2019. During their time in Durham in the 1980’s, Sue was a member of Epworth Methodist Church. Later in the ‘90’s and early 2000’s, she and Jerry were members of White Plains Methodist Church in Cary, NC. Much of the last several years of her life were spent being a health care warrior and primary care giver to her mother, daughter Peyton and sister Brenda.
Sue’s fondest moments in life were time spent with Jerry at the coast, nurturing and being best friends with her two daughters and being with the grandchildren, her family, extended family and friends. Her youth in Wilson was spent with a core of special girlfriends whom she loved and cherished. Their fun times included following the Cyclones winning three state football championships in 1967-1969.
She is survived by her husband Jerry, daughter Page, son in law Jason, and three grandchildren, Braeden Cole Holton, Savannah Grace Pfister and Evelyn Hope Pfister. Her daughter Peyton passed away in August 2021. Also predeceasing Sue were her parents, a brother Herbert PB Walston, sister Cathy and nieces Pam and Penny. Brother Doug Walston (Sue), sisters in law Diane Rawson (Dana) and Debra Gambill Avera (Vince) and brothers in law Jimmy Gambill (Connie), and Randy Gambill (Sharilyn) and many nieces and nephews and friends provided special love and care in the last year of her life. Her neighbors and great friends Michele and Steve Grow were especially kind and supportive. A special thanks goes to Melissa, Suzanne and Zaida of Transitions Life Care for providing loving care to Sue during her last several months battling the cancer that took her life.
A celebration of Sue’s life will be held on Thursday May 25, 2023, 1 pm at Brown Wynne Funeral Home, 200 Southeast Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511. The family will receive family and friends at a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Autism Society of NC, Transitions Life Care (transitionslifecare.org/donate) or the charity of one’s choice.
