Steven Thomas Varner entered into this world September 16, 1962 to the parents of Frances Ledbetter Varner and Thomas Franklin Varner a bright and happy child. He bounded through life with a pleasant smile and his warm, outgoing personality – making friends everywhere he went. Steven left this world February 8, 2013 after waging a valiant and courageous battle against a brain tumor and subsequent brain infection.
Calling Cary, NC home for the last 12+ years, Steve is formerly of Ravenswood, WV. He graduated from Ravenswood High School in 1980, joining the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, graduating with a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1984. He received his Masters from William & Mary in 1992, and was an employee of Lenovo.
Steven is survived by his mother, Frances Varner of St. Petersburg, FL; his sister, Ellen Marie Varner of Charlotte, NC; and two children, Charles Thomas (“Charlie”), 23, of Pittsboro, NC and Curtis Steven, 20, of Cary, NC.
He is preceded in death by his father, Thomas Franklin Varner; his paternal grandmother, Lohr Varner Dyke; and his maternal grandparents, Herman and Darlie Ledbetter.
Steven was a proud member of the German Club at Virginia Tech, an avid golfer and passionate skier. He loved his Hokies and never missed an opportunity to cheer them on. He loved life and lived every day to the fullest. Consistently optimistic and pragmatic, he was a devoted son, father, brother and friend who loved his family and never failed to let them know. A better friend, no one could ask for.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 11, 2013 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, NC.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Roush Funeral Home in Ravenswood, WV.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be presented in his memory to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center @ Duke University Medical Center; Duke Hospice – Hock Family Pavilion; or the charitable donation of your choice.
