Sarah Charlton Thorn died February 18, 2013, at her home in Cary, NC, after a long illness. She was born on July 25, 1924, in Erie, PA, to C. Harrison Lund and Gladys Freeman. She graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1942 and Mercyhurst College in 1945, both in Erie.
In 1948, she married Robert D. Charlton of San Antonio, TX. They had 4 children, David, Eric, George and Catherine. After Robert's untimely death in 1960, Sally married Leslie D. Thorn of Wichita Falls, TX, in 1963, bringing four new children to the family, Bruce, Debby, Cindy, and Alan Thorn.
Known as an active, cheerful and hard-working volunteer, Sally served in community and religious organizations throughout her life including: Junior League, Girl Scouts, Meals on Wheels, and the Senior Citizen's Center of New Braunfels. A lifelong, faithful member of the Episcopal Church, she volunteered in numerous church activities and committees. She grew up loving the outdoors, bicycling and swimming and walked at least a mile every day until near her death. She is the mother of three Eagle Scouts and grandmother of one.
She is survived by her eight children, twenty grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 221 Union Street, Cary, NC on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to institutions developing treatments for cancer, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease or other charities.
