Raymond “Ray” Vincent Hurley III, 69, of Cary, NC, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, in Raleigh, NC. Born on June 24, 1952, in Staten Island, NY, he was the oldest son of the late Raymond Vincent Hurley II and Naomi Marie Melnick. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his sister, Naomi Marie Wilson and brother John William Hurley.
Ray grew up in Staten Island, graduating from New Dorp High School and City University of New York. He dedicated his life to positively impacting the lives of thousands of children through directing and organizing summer camps, after-school programs and sports. He was the Camp Director at multiple summer camps in upstate New York before becoming the Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County in Shelby, NC. After 32 years at “the Club” Mr. Ray retired and moved to Cary, NC, to be close to his children and his six grandchildren, who were the joys of his life. His hobbies included barking at dogs, teaching his grandchildren the delight of Judge Judy and The Price is Right, and being dependably late.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Ann Walker Hurley, a son, Shaun Hurley and wife Cathy, of Raleigh NC, a daughter Megan Dezendorf and husband Kent, of Cary NC, his grandchildren, Charlie Hurley, Patrick Dezendorf, Macy Hurley, Luke Dezendorf, Eddie Hurley, and Lance Dezendorf. His brother and sister-in-laws, Joe Truelove, Karen Sugarman, Chuck and Angie Walker; brothers Paul, Joe and Brian Hurley; his beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special family friend, Irene Curry, round out those left behind to treasure fond memories of his humor, kindness, generosity, and turkey soup.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12:00 noon Friday, February 4, 2022 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Road, Cary, NC 27513.
