Mary Katherine "Kate" Burdge

Kate was born on July 30, 1930, in Sidney, Ohio. She is the daughter of the late Lawrence and Edith Yohey. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Sam Wesley Burdge. She is survived by her children, Brenda Sue Burdge of Reidsville; Wesley Hale Burdge and wife Pat of Raleigh; Kimberlee Ann Burdge of Cary; and Galan Scott Burdge and wife Cathy of Holly Springs; and by her adored grandchildren, Derek Jordan Burdge, Samuel Page Burdge, Katherine Jeannette Burdge, Michael Brandon Burdge, and Catherine Elizabeth Burdge.

Other survivors include her three sisters, Louise Gariety and husband John of Naples, Florida; Barbara Carson of Palatine, Illinois; and Edith Mae Howell and husband Willard of Urbana, Ohio. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins, and an extended loving family of friends.

Kate is a graduate of Sidney High School. She also was an Exemplar of Beta Sigma Phi of Ohio. She worked in many retail positions at Hickory Farms and Miller and Rhoades. Kate worked from September 1973 to December 1992 at the Town of Cary in the Collections Department. She is best known for her crafts and had a booth at Cary's Lazy Dazes Arts and Crafts Festival for 20 years, under the name of Kate's Crafts. She had several different locations over the years, but for many years her booth was located on the corner of Academy and West Chatham Streets in front of Ashworth's Drugs. Kate had a wide variety of crafts that she sold every year, some of which over the years have consisted of cross-stitch pieces, jewelry bags, Santa heads, Christmas carolers, dresses for little girls, Halloween items, clothespin dolls, mouse door stoppers, tole painting, etc. She also enjoyed quilting in her later years and has quilted all of her children and grandchildren quilts. Other interests Kate enjoyed over her lifetime included sewing, being on a bowling league, playing bridge, playing in a local softball league, and she also served as a Cookie Chairman for a local Girl Scouts troop for several years in the 60s. Kate loved going on vacation every year to the beach with her family and sometimes for just the day.

Kate was a devoted and very loving and giving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Kate's family would like to thank Angela Jones, who has been her homecare companion since February, for her devotion, dedicated service, excellent care, and love she has given to our mother. We would also like to thank Jennifer McCarthy and Beverly Curtis for their dedicated service and help with our mother's care. All three ladies are with Southern Comfort Home Care of Pittsboro. We would also like to thank Hospice of Wake County for their support during this difficult time.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, June 29, 2011 from 6-8 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. Graveside services will be held privately at Hillcrest Cemetery.
