Lilly Flye VanStory age 89, of Cary, NC, (formerly Fayetteville, NC) died peacefully in her sleep on February 19, 2024. She was born to the late Paul L. Flye and Lillie S. Flye on January 28, 1935 in Greenville, NC.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, William “Bill” VanStory of 23 years; and son, Michael Stewart Lewis; her sisters, Dorothy F. Aldridge of Greenville, NC, Delphia Rittenhouse of Virginia Beach, VA, Elizabeth Hedgepeth of San Antonio, Texas, Alice McGowan of Brentwood, TN; brothers, W. Paul Flye, Richard Flye of Greenville, NC, Robert E. Flye of Nashville, TN, Larry Flye of Tulare, CA and Alton Flye of Jacksonville, FL.
She is survived and will be deeply missed by her devoted children, Charles Lewis Jr. of Raleigh, NC; Paul Lewis, (Debbie) of Fuquay Varina, NC; Meg Lewis Moore, (Kelly) of Mooresville, NC; Danny Mcleod of Wilmington, NC; Ned Mcleod, (wife, Rhonda) of Fayetteville, NC. Her grandchildren, Ashley Lewis, (Patrick Barefoot); Hannah Lewis, (Jeff); Patrick Moore, Hunter Moore, William Moore, Michael Lewis Broadwell and Sydney Mcleod; and her great grandchildren, Jack Cook, Addison Barefoot, Noah Carella, Zoey Carella; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lilly and Bill were faithful, active members of First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, NC, where she served as a deacon, a Stephen Minister, sang in the choir and served on many committees. Lilly was a proud Master Gardener and served as a board member of the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, was on the board of the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens, was a founding member of the MacGregor Downs Garden Club, and a member of the Cary Garden Club.
Funeral services will be held at Glenaire Retirement Community, 120 Wee Loch Drive, Cary, NC at 1:00pm on Monday, February 26, 2024, immediately followed by a time for the family to receive friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens 536 N. Eastern Blvd., Fayetteville, NC 28301, attention: Meg Suraci.
