Katy was born on March 29, 1936, during a spring snowstorm at her grandparents’ home in Burlington Junction, Missouri. The eldest of four children born to her parents, William Raymond Nicholas and Ethel Bernice Boyer Nicholas, Katy was raised in Atchison, Kansas. She graduated from Atchison High School and went to college at Northwest Missouri State. Following college, Katy worked in various industries including education, pharmaceutical development, and international business. Once retired, she filled her days with travel and spending time with her family and friends. She also joined and participated in the Daughters of the American Revolution, a nonprofit, nonpolitical women’s service organization whose members can prove their lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence during the Revolutionary War.
Katy married her husband, Brigadier General (Ret.) Alfred Eugene Tobin, in 1963. They were married for nearly sixty years until his passing on March 23, 2023. Katy is survived by her daughter, Darby Godfrey of Georgetown, South Carolina, by her son Jay Tobin of Raleigh, North Carolina, by her daughter Jill Kelso and her husband David of Raleigh, North Carolina, and by her son Sam Tobin and his wife Doris of Cary, North Carolina. Katy is survived by her nine grandchildren, Ashley Godfrey, Jason Godfrey, Ryan Godfrey, Mary Stuart Tolson and her husband Holden, Georgia Kelso, Reid Tobin, Erin Tobin, Mary Callan Kelso and Hank Kelso. Katy is survived by her four great-grandchildren, Noah Godfrey, Haven Godfrey, Sawyer Tolson and Wylie Tolson.
Katy is survived also by her sister Rosie Hale McDonald, by her sister Dorothy Pigg and her husband Dwaine, by her sister-in-law Linda Nicholas, and by many nieces, nephews, and their spouses, children and grandchildren. Katy was preceded in death by her brother William Nicholas, Jr., and by her brother-in-law Ward McDonald.
The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 7, 2024, at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church located at 804 High House Road in Cary, North Carolina. There will be a reception at the church following the funeral mass. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home located at 200 SE Maynard Road in Cary, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Cary, North Carolina.
