He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Willie Ruth Mangum Hockaday and their children, Rhonda H. Campbell and Rodney Hockaday (wife Melissa); five grandchildren, Taylor (husband Pavel), Landon, and Wyatt Campbell, and Jordan and Aleigh Hockaday. He is also survived by his two brothers, Benny Hockaday (wife Frances) and Jerry Hockaday (wife Brenda).
He graduated from Angier High School and North Carolina State University in 1950 and 1954, respectively. A U.S. Army Veteran, Fred served honorably as a Central Intelligence Lieutenant. Afterwards, he worked 40+ years in the Department of Agriculture, promoting North Carolina agricultural products across North America. Fred was an active member of the Raleigh community, acting as the head cashier at the North Carolina State Fair for many years. He was a prominent member of Forest Hills Baptist Church who served his church family through many roles: decan, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, and landscaper, to name a few.
An avid golfer, Fred was a founding member of Bentwinds Country Club. He also found joy in gardening and travel, seeing all 50 states with his beloved wife. Fred lived a long and happy life defined by service to others. Service to his community, his church, his country, and most importantly, his family. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
A visitation for Fred will be held Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:15 PM at Forest Hills Baptist Church, 201 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, NC 27607, followed by a funeral service at 1:30 PM.
