Fred Arthur Webb, Jr., 93, of Glenaire Retirement Community, passed away peacefully Friday, December 14, 2012. Born to the late Fred Arthur Webb, Sr. and Della May Hester Webb on August 7, 1919, in Charlotte, N.C., he was also predeceased by a sister Mary Parker Webb. Fred graduated from NC State in 1940 and enlisted in the US Navy on December 20, 1941. Lt. Webb served as torpedo officer, ship’s service officer, assistant gunnery officer, and instructor of torpedo control on the USS Carmick in the Atlantic theater and was awarded both American and European African Campaigns Ribbons. Returning to Raleigh after the war, Fred went to work for North Carolina Equipment Company from which he retired in 1983. Fred was a faithful member of both West Raleigh Presbyterian Church, which he joined in 1936 and where he was presented the Outstanding Older Adult Award in 2008, and the Raleigh Exchange Club.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean Morris Webb; children Fred Arthur Webb, III (Jean) and Robert Morris Webb (Debra), all of Charlotte; and grandchildren Frederick Bryan Webb of Banner Elk, N.C., Laura Elizabeth Webb of Durham, N.C., and Alan Christopher Webb of Washington, D.C. Fred will be buried in Oakwood Cemetery in services attended by family.
A memorial service will be held Monday, December 17, at Glenaire in Cary at 11:00 a.m. with Reverends Scott Phillips of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church and Meredith Bratcher of Glenaire Retirement Community officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.
