Benny R Hockaday, aged 87, passed away December 15, 2022. He was born in Angier, North Carolina to James Fredrick and Lela Hockaday. Benny is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances Hockaday, his daughter Bonnie Dean and husband Joey, his son Ben and wife Betsy, his son Joe, his brother Jerry and wife Brenda along with their children Chris and Kevin, his brother-in-law Charles Odom along with his children Michael and Sara, his sister-in-law Ruth Hockaday and her children Rodney and Rhonda, and Benny’s grandchildren Meghan and Anna. He was preceded in death by his brother Fred, and his sister-in-law, Joy Odom.
Benny lived a full and active life as a husband, father, and member of his Church. He was an HVAC contractor, a member of Rotary International, PHCC-NC, ASHRAE, and was appointed to the North Carolina State Building Commission. He was an avid golfer and a lifetime member of the NC State Wolfpack Club.
• He was a Deacon and was chairman for Building and Grounds as well as Senior Adult Sunday School director at Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh.
• He served on the board of directors of PHCC of NC (Formerly NCAPHCC) from 1978-1990, and as its President in 1987.
• He was the recipient of the NCAPHCC’s Outstanding Member of the Year award
• He served on the North Carolina State Building Commission from 1992-1998.
• He served as Chairman of the NCAPHCC building committee
• He was National PHCC Contractor of the Year
• He served as President of the Triangle chapter of ASHRAE.
• He was instrumental in getting legislation passed forming an NC State Building Commission
• He assisted in writing and seeing passed the NC Prompt Pay bill
• He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
• He was a member of the Downtown Raleigh Rotary Club
• He was an original member of Bentwinds Country Club
• He was a Life member of the Wolfpack Club
• He served in the North Carolina National Guard
• He graduated from Anger High School
• He attended Campbell University and North Carolina Sate University
A service will be held at Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at 11 AM, with the burial held at Montlawn Cemetery immediately after. The family will receive friends at 9:30 AM that day at the church.
