Benny Joel Furr, 87, joyfully joined his beloved wife Tempie and daughter, Jane in their heavenly home recently. A faithful, loving husband, father, family member, friend and disciple of Christ, Ben will be dearly missed by many.
Born and raised in Stanly County, he chose his beautiful wife of 68 years from their third grade class and cherished their love throughout their lives together. A graduate of New London High School in Albemarle,
Ben served in the Army briefly before attending NC State University, where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He enjoyed a lifelong career with Carolina Power and Light as a pioneer and powerful
leader in the development and dissemination of nuclear power. A Senior VP with oversight of 3 Nuclear Plants, he also served on the NCSU Nuclear Engineering Department Industry Advisory Committee for several years.A brilliant, well respected, businessman, Ben moved his young family to Cary, North Carolina in 1971, carefully choosing their lifelong home in a community full of families with children. Everyone’s favorite neighbor, family, and friends, the Furrs are the epitome of southern charm: hospitality, generosity, warmth and grace. Role models of love on every level, Ben and Tempie radiated the love of Christ through every relationship, word and deed.
Ben enjoyed golfing, fishing and being outdoors in their beautiful flowering yard. The family enjoyed many adventures traveling through the years with family and friends.Ben and Tempie were active members of White Plains United Methodist Church for decades, where they enjoyed participating in weekly worship and the Pathfinders Sunday school class.
Always humble, gentle and kind, Ben and the Furr family legacy lives on through the endowment of multiple scholarships for engineering students through NCSU. In lieu of flowers, please keep the legacy alive by supporting the Jane Leigh Furr Memorial Scholarship Fund.
A private graveside service and celebration of life were held in honor and memory of the Furr family at Bethany United Methodist Church in Albemarle, North Carolina.
