Alice Lee Peterson Sykes, 92, died peacefully at her home on September 6, 2018. Alice was born April 15, 1926 in Pender County, NC. Daughter of the late Matt R Peterson and Lila Corbett Peterson. Alice is predeceased by her husband Howard M Sykes and daughter Edith Renee Sykes. She is survived by her daughter Nancy Sykes. Edith Renee was born with Down’s Syndrome. The doctors said to put her into an institution. They did not. As a result, Edith Renee had a wonderful life and Alice became a Special Ed teacher at Cary Elementary for many years. Later Howard and Alice and a few others were the founders of ‘Life Experiences’ a place where children like Edith Renee with mental disabilities could go to when they became 21 and could no longer stay in school. They also helped get a few group homes started in the Cary area. Alice loved going to church. First Baptist then later Greenwood Baptist. She had many friends there and the part she enjoyed the most was the singing. Her many loves included her family, friends, gardening, playing bridge, volunteer work, traveling, shopping especially for bargains but most of all she loved Dancing. May you dance among the stars, dear Alice Lee.
