David was born, the first of three children, in Nashua, NH (1937) to Theren Charles Cox and Ruby Jewel Cox. Theren entered WWII in March 1944 and served as a Staff Sargent for the 109th Infantry, 28th Division. He fought in The Battle of the Hürtgen Forest, Hürtgenwald, Germany, where he died November 8th, 1944, earning a Purple Heart. David had just started Second Grade at Reed’s Ferry Elementary School, Merrimack, NH. His family moved to Macon, GA, in August of 1945, where he lived with his siblings and graduated from Dudley M Hughes Vocational High School in May of 1956.
David joined the US Navy on December 1st, 1957, serving 4 years on USS TICODEROGA CVA14 Aircraft Carrier. After serving in the Navy, David returned to Macon, GA to marry Sandra L Lewis in early 1960. David and Sandra moved to Jacksonville, FL, where he began working for Southern Railway System. After settling into civilian life working for Southern Railway, the newlyweds had their first and only child, David Allen Cox, Jr, born August 17th, 1961. Shortly thereafter and finding the frogs in Jacksonville too loud at night to sleep, they moved back to Macon, GA, where David began working for GA Power Company at Plant Arkwright. Years later, GA Power transferred him to Cartersville, GA to work at the newly constructed Plant Bowen, until his retirement at age 55, in 1993. David enjoyed a long 30-year retirement that included traveling the US by motor home and enjoying his grandkids.
David was a strong believer in Jesus Christ. He was confirmed at The Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 205 West Cherokee Avenue, Cartersville, GA 30120. As a Christian, he enjoyed attending Sunday services at Ascension, and briefly Emerson Baptist Church. Later, he dedicated himself to a Bible study program, of which he rarely missed a day. He enjoyed helping others, too, participating at Ascension Friday Night Suppers, Building & Grounds Committee, and the Episcopal Men’s Group. He also supported our local Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter, where he volunteered many nights watching over the residents and facility. And lastly, David gave money to a variety of charities throughout the US, including the Salvation Army, Red Cross, and Native American Children’s Fund.
