Macky Sellers was born on September 26, 1935 in Farmersville, Texas to Homer & Sarah Sellers. He graduated from North Dallas High School in 1954 where he was offensive end on the 1953 bulldog football team which was undefeated in district play and lost in the state championship to Lubbock. He attended what is now the University of North Texas where he was in the Lambda Chi Fraternity. After college Macky worked for State Farm Insurance in Dallas and was a member of the National Guard. While at State Farm his friend and co-worker, Norma Stasio, introduced him to her husband, Andy Stasio, who became Macky’s mentor and lifelong friend.
The Stasio’s, (Andy, Norma, Drew, Steve and sweet Mary Ann), where like his second family. Andy asked Macky to become a partner with Andy and his other partners to open Shakey’s in San Antonio where Macky opened all five locations. It was during this same time that Macky married Eleanor Barnes his wife of 47 years. The partnership sold all of the San Antonio Shakey’s to the Hunt brothers and as part of the sale Macky managed the transition for the next year.
Next, Andy, Macky and their new partners obtained the franchise rights for Church’s Chicken in San Francisco where Macky opened several San Francisco locations. Macky and Eleanor have many, many wonderful memories of their time together in San Francisco. Over the years Macky and Andy were involved in several other franchises and Macky was also involved in ventures with Matt Martinez.
Macky spent most of his adult life in the food service industry. He became a member of the Texas Restaurant Association (TRA) back in the 1960’s. He was President of both San Antonio and Dallas chapters. Macky was the state President of TRA in 1987/88 and he and Eleanor crisscrossed the state visiting all 23 TRA city chapters. This was also Richie Jackson’s first year as Executive Vice President of TRA, a position he continues to hold today. This was another time in Macky’s and Eleanor’s life that brought them great joy and fond memories. Restaurant Association members and owners are among the most caring and fun loving people you would ever want to be around.
Macky is survived by loving wife Eleanor, his children (from a previous marriage), son Kyle Sellers, daughter Kelli and husband Claude Brewer, grandsons Brandon and Chase, nieces, nephews and very special friends Randy Randolph and Bryce Collerette.
Macky is preceded in death by parents Homer and Sarah Sellers, sisters Marsha Ford and Jeanie Montgomery and his “man’s best friend” Rascal.
