James “Jim” Buck, age 87, of Lewisville, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2013. Jim was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather and friend to all who knew him.
He was born April 23, 1925 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of Wilmer and Lillie (Hadlund) Buck. Jim was raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1943, where he was appointed Major in the ROTC, selected Best Citizen by the faculty, and played football and baseball. Jim’s family attended the First Baptist Church.
Jim served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946. He was a part of the V-12 Navy College Training Program at Wabash College. and played football. He attended Naval Flight Prep School at Ohio Wesleyan University and went on to earn a Bachelors Degree from the University of Illinois – Urbana. He received a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Nebraska – Omaha in 1950.
He taught school and worked in real estate early in his career. Jim joined IBM in sales in 1956 and held many management positions until he retired in 1988 in Rochester, Minnesota. He was active in the Shriners and Elks Club.
Jim relocated to Carrollton, Texas in 1988. He was a member, elder and deacon of the The Nor’Kirk Presbyterian Church. Jim volunteered at the Department for the Aging and a local Carrollton hospital. He was involved in community affairs, avid reader of world and local events, enjoyed sport activities and trivia, and cherished quality time with his family and friends.
He was united in marriage to Sadie Mae Vanderpool on August 24, 1947 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They were married 51 years, until her death in January 26, 1999. They had one daughter, Susan Buck. Several years later, Jim was blessed with another family when he married Gleda “Jackie” Gresham in January 10, 2003 in Carrollton, TX. Jackie preceded him in death in September 13, 2011.
Jim was preceded in death by Sadie Mae Buck and Jackie Buck; his parents; his sister, Lillian Buck Lantis of Ottawa, Kansas; and brother, Carl Buck of Red Oak, Iowa.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Susan Buck Badger and husband, David of Lewisville, TX; granddaughter Ramie Badger Elkins, and husband Nelson; and great-grandchildren Emory and Genevieve “Gigi” Elkins of Lewisville, TX; grandson Brandon Badger, and wife, Corynn Badger, and great-grandchildren Natalie and Owen Badger of Austin, TX; sister Virginia Buck Moats of Park Rapids, MN; nieces: Janice, Ruth, Patricia, Barbara, Roberta; nephews Rodger, Curtiss, James, Robert; step-daughter, Gloria Sanders of Bridgeport, TX, and step-son, Phillip Hoile and wife Deborah of Blanchard, OK; grandchildren Tracy, Stacey, Brandi, Kelly, Jason; and great-grandchildren Toby, Caylee, Hunter, Cody, Hailey, Alex, Aaron, Shawn and Kris; and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, March 22, 2013 at The Nor’kirk Presbyterian Church, 3915 North Josey Lane, Carrollton, TX, with Reverend Bill Parr officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00pm before the service.
Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the American Heart Association.
