Harry Stanford Owens, 85, a long-time Carrollton resident died early Wednesday following an extended illness. The son of John Walter and Dona Power Owens, he was born October 4, 1927 in Bingen, Arkansas. He moved with his family at an early age to Caddo, Oklahoma and later the family moved to Durant where he graduated from high school. Following graduation from high school he earned an undergraduate degree from, what is now, Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant. He later earned a Master’s degee in Math and was employed for several years by Lockheed.
He came to Carrollton from California in the early 1970’s and was a teacher in the Farmers Branch and Carrollton Independent School districts for several years. Following his teaching career he became involved in the newspaper field working for the Dallas Times Herald as Circulation Manager and after the Herald ceased publication, he worked in management for USA Today. The priority of his many interests was his deep devotion to his family.
Preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and three brothers and his wife Carolyn, he is survived by his son, Nickolas Lee Owens of Carrollton; a daughter, Rebecca Bernice Felt of Denison; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Joshua Felt ; a sister, Edna Muriel Truitt of Ft. Sumner, N.M. and a sister-in-law, Jessie Owens of Carrollton.
Visitation will be at 9 am. Saturday, January 26th at Rhoton Funeral Home where services will follow at 10 am. Burial will be at 2 pm in the Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma.
