As a young man, he attended Columbus North High School where he was an All State running back on the football team. Mike held the record for most points scored for over 40 years. After high school, Mike went on to attend Ball State University. He played football at Ball State as well where he held many records during his time there. He led the conference in yards per reception and touchdowns in 1975, held the record for yards per reception in 1976, and set the record for the most career receptions in 1977.
