Jonathan B. Layton, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Sunday, November 17, at the age of 76, after a brief battle with cancer.
Jon was born February 25, 1948 in Anderson, Indiana. He was the youngest son of Archibald and Jayne (Hall) Layton. Jon graduated from North Central High School and Ball State University. While at Ball State, he met Jeanette Harter of Wakarusa, Indiana, and on November 6, 1971, they married. They were married for more than 49 years before her death in 2020.
Jon worked his entire career in supply chain management and retired from Rolls Royce in 2014. He kept busy after retirement, caring for his newborn grandchildren, vacationing with his wife in Florida, and scouring the internet and local stores to find the perfect gift for the people he loved. He was an amazing and thoughtful gift giver and loved Christmas.
Jon could fix pretty much anything. He could always be relied upon to bring the right tool for the job and taught his kids how to take care of things, arming them with tool kits when they left for college. He was at every game throughout his kids’ sports “careers” and continued that tradition with his grandchildren. He often helped with camp pick ups for his grandkids and always brought the best snacks.
Jon is survived by his daughter Stephanie (Eric) Kendall, son Christopher (Erin), grandchildren Maxwell and Lily, and his sister Susan. He was preceded in death by his father, Arch, mother Jayne, brother Gary, and his beloved wife, Jeanette. He’s missed her terribly since her passing in 2020 and the family takes comfort in knowing they are now reunited.
There will be no visitation or service. The family plans a private memorial in his favorite place, Sanibel, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jon may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
