Obituary of David Deverell Gill
David Deverell Gill, age 83, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on June 22, 2024 in his home in Carmel, IN. He was born on September 17, 1940, in Rockford, IL. David is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Mary Ellen, and their five children: D. Christopher (Cathy), Trenton (Madeline), Moira (Brian Barone), Bridget (William Yallaly), and Mark. He was a proud grandfather to 17 grandchildren. David also leaves behind his brothers, Thomas W. II (Betty) and Theodore (Jan), his sister, Vida Langenkamp, and brother-in-law, David Heideman, Sr. He is preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Isabel, his sister, Jeanne Heideman, and brothers-in-law, Richard and John Powers and Jim Langenkamp. David was a proud alumnus of the University of Illinois. His work career spanned 42 years at GTE, where he made significant contributions and formed lasting friendships. After his time with GTE, David entered public service for his community including various local boards, and most importantly his 16-year service as Westfield Township Trustee. There he expanded several public services and was instrumental in establishing McGregor Park in Westfield. Earlier in life David also served several years in the U.S. Army Reserves, a testament to his sense of duty and deep love of his country. David lived life to its fullest and relished in the simple (and free) things of life: time with loved ones, a hearty laugh, a dip in the pool, Cubs baseball on the radio, and providing color commentary while watching “Christmas Vacation” or “The Shawshank Redemption” for the umpteenth time. He was a master of making friends wherever he went and striking up conversation in any situation. An avid sports enthusiast, he was dedicated for many years to area softball clubs — where he was often known even by long-time teammates as “Coach Gill.” He cherished family vacations and creating memories with his loved ones (Long Live PPI). Next to his “love” and his family, he was most devoted to God and his Catholic faith and cherished Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish. Visitation service will be held on Tuesday, June 25 from 5-7pm with rosary at 7pm and Wednesday from 10-11am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (OLMC). A funeral service will be held at OLMC on Wednesday, June 26 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students), Sisters of Notre Dame retirement fund, and Birthright of Cicero, IN to honor David's faith and support a cause close to his heart. David's legacy of love, dedication, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
