Theodore Bernard Freitag passed away quietly at Regina General Hospital on April 28, 2015, after a three year battle with cancer. He was born May 14, 1941, in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, moving with his family to the Alameda area not long afterward. Ted and his brother Ben helped their father Berthold raise purebred Shorthorn cattle, which usually did very well at 4H competitions and exhibitions, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. As a recipient of the Dalgleish Scholarship for leadership in 4H, Ted went on a ship’s voyage from Hudson Bay to England, where he toured historical sites, museums and farms. He graduated with a two-year diploma from the University of Saskatchewan School of Agriculture, and eventually purchased most of the Meda-Vu farm--which was awarded the status of Master Farm--from Bert and Martha.
Ted spoke of his fondness for the land and wild things, the satisfaction of taking off a good crop, and the enjoyment he got from engaging with people in the farming business. A gentle and often solitary soul, he loved cattle and was attached to his pets (including horses, dogs and geese). He loved architecture, art and history and was an avid reader of books and magazines on these subjects—a pastime which was compromised after he lost sight in one eye three years ago following surgery for melanoma. He was respected as an expert bidder at auction sales, and loved to reflect on the stories contained within a hand-crafted article from another time. Ted was passionate about colourful flowers and took special pride in his gladiola patch on the south side of the house in town. He also tended a prolific garden for many years. He was a very loving and patient Uncle to the Buck and Freitag children, who remember him as a source of much fun--like tagging along on cattle drives, going on picnics, listening to his latest record purchase, and swimming in the pool he once made for them out of straw bales.
Ted’s selfless care of his mother in her declining years will always be remembered and appreciated. He was also caring and generous to those living on the fringes of society—as he did, himself.
He is survived by his sister Gertrude (Erwin) Buck of Saskatoon, nieces Sharon (Frank) of Seattle and Deborah of Saskatoon, and nephew Darren (Kirsten) Buck of Calgary and their sons Eric and Peter; brother Ben (Darlene) Freitag of Regina Beach and their children Burton (Cindy) and son Samuel of Saskatoon, Justin (Nicole) of Regina Beach, and Sarah of Regina; and by his dear friend Paul Ayotte of Alameda.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2015 from the Alameda United Church with Sandy Dalziel officiating. Interment in Alameda Cemetery.
If friends so wish, donations i memory of Ted may be made to a charity of their own choice.
