It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Richard Edwards. He passed away peacefully on January 4 in Cape Coral, Florida at the age of 76. He was so many things to so many people: a beloved husband, a father, a Pa, a brother, an uncle, and a friend.
Richard’s journey led him to Tulane University in New Orleans. While attending Tulane, Richard cultivated enduring friendships that became an integral part of his life. He always looked forward to the reunions where him and his friends would share stories, laughter, and memories of their times at Tulane.
Richard was previously married to Elaine Edwards (Vincenzi) and together they welcomed two children into their lives, Jessica and Andrew. Despite the eventual dissolution of their marriage, Richard and Elaine managed to forge a lasting friendship creating a harmonious blended family.
Richard exemplified the true meaning of a devoted father consistently prioritizing the well-being and aspirations of his children. Whether navigating the intricacies of education, cheering them on at sporting events, or celebrating their marriages, Richard's unwavering support was a testament to his boundless love as a parent. His love continued to grow with the birth of each grandchild.
Richard found love once again when he met Concetta Somma. Their connection deepened and flourished through a shared passion for travel, a mutual appreciation of history, a love for music, and a shared zest for intellectual pursuits. Their adventurous spirits embarked on journeys that spanned the globe creating a tapestry of cherished memories and a legacy of love. When they were not traveling, you could find them enjoying each other’s company, putting together puzzles, spending time with family or enjoying the wildlife in their backyard.
Among his many interests Richard found immense joy in sharing the world of sports with family and friends but especially with his grandson Kayden. They bonded over their shared love for the Red Sox, Patriots, and Tom Brady. Richard’s brother, Tom, was his companion in conversations about history. They would spend countless hours reflecting on the historical wonders they encountered across the globe. Richard also enjoyed reading the New Yorker and passing along issues to people he thought would enjoy them as much as he did.
Richard's reputation for straightforwardness was complemented by his remarkable capacity for empathetic listening and sage advice. A reassuring presence, he provided solace and guidance to all who sought his counsel. Richard's sense of humor became a source of comfort, offering lightness even in challenging moments.
The void left by Richard's departure is immeasurable, and he will be forever etched in our hearts. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Laura Edwards. He is survived by his devoted wife Concetta Edwards, his daughter Jessica Lyons, his son Andrew Edwards, his son-in-law Keith Lyons, his daughter-in-law Dana Edwards, and his three grandchildren Kayden Lyons, Ella Edwards, and Evan Edwards. His brothers Thomas and Mark join in the collective grief.
A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Southwest Florida, 3372 Woods Edge Circle #103, Bonita Springs, FL 34134.
