Missing you dad.  I think of you  everyday. When I feel overwhelmed with sadness, I try to picture you in heaven, and imagine how happy and healthy you are there.  Thank you for teaching me to focus on things eternal, it is the only thing that helps  to ease my broken heart.

Once In Viet Nam we had to go through a week of  jungle training, but we found a way of keep close.  Once again, John kept us and all our other friends at ease. This was not an easy task, given the circumstances.  

During our time in Viet Nam we were separated into different companies, but we would run into each other during our resupply times on many of the different bases. It was always a great way for us to catch up on our times in the jungle. We had many stories to tell each other and talk about the letters we received from home.

When our tour ended in Vietnam, and once home our friendship continued.  John, Tom and myself always remained good friends.   We spend lots of time with our wives and reminiscing of what we all had to go through.   

Even though we were separated by time and life itself, we felt blessed that we found each other on the internet.   The bond always remained strong.  Reconnecting allowed for us to once again spend time together with John & Pat and their lovely family.  It was as if time had never passed.  

Spending time with John, Pat and his family in Florida meant so much to Barbara and I.  Barbara found him to be so laid back and loved his funny sense of humor.  

We will miss John for a very long time.  He was a true friend and special human being.  His gentle ways and infectious smile and laughter will never be forgotten.  He will always remain in our hearts.  Until we meet again, my dear friend and Vietnam buddy.

It has been several months since the passing of my very dear friend, John.   
Writing my thoughts and farewell to my friend has been very difficult. 

 When I first met John back in June of 1970, we were 20 year old.  We served in the army and went to Vietnam.  We were in our teens and forced to become adults within a few weeks. We were both from Brooklyn, New York, and instantly developed a bond that grew into a long and lasting friendship.

We became friends while we were in basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey.  While in basic training we were separated into different companies.  During our free time, we were able to spend time with each other and eventually got to meet each other’s wives and families.  John and I became very good friends.  John always had a great sense of hummer, which continued throughout his lifetime.  

After our 9 weeks of basic training we were shipped out immediately to the state of Washington to Ft Lewis.  At Ft Lewis we continued our friendship.  We were now in the same battalion and doing our AIT training together.  During our free time we got to spend more time together and realized what a great and funny person John was.  

It was very difficult dealing with being away from our loved ones.  You could always depend on John to help us cope.  John had a natural ability to always be positive, have a great funny sense of humor, when we were having a bad day.  He always made us feel that things would be fine.      

After our AIT training we were able to go home and be with our loved ones, before our tour in Vietnam.  We had 30 days of free time where we spent time together with our dear friends, John, Tom, another dear friend from Vietnam.  We had lots of time sharing some of our stories with each other and our wives and my wife to be.  We always said that we would keep in contact after our discharge from  the service. (2 OF 2 CON’T)


John was one good guy. He always seemed mild with a funny laugh. No one would think of him as a cop, or one of our Vietnam warriors. He loved God, even back when it wasnt in vougue. My only memories of him were very early ones. Him, Pat, the Edward boys, Sherman Street. Great memories that come with large families. John you fought the good fight, I will remember you and Pat in my prayers, rest in peace.

John was such a special man. Always had an encouraging word! So helpful when he had his appliance business. Hugs Pat and family! He will be missed this side of heaven; but know he is having a blast there. 💓

 I feel like we shared our whole adult lives. We met the dsy we were drafted and remained friends  for over fifty years. I can honestly say we never had a fight and I  could always  count on you for  support or for advise. I miss you already  and that will never change. I have always respected and admired you and i always will.

Uncle John, I have so many great memories with you that I will cherish forever. You were a great role model and gave great advice. I am grateful I got to call you my Uncle. We all still tell that story of when we were all eating dinner together and you were discussing everyone’s day and it was my turn to tell about my day and I didn’t like the topic which was me lol so I had to think quickly to come up with something to change it. I waited until you looked away for a quick second and when you looked back at me during this conversation I asked you if I had something in my teeth? After I had put a big piece of food in the front of my mouth and you erupted in such laughter and cried and couldn’t stop laughing and we all laughed until we cried. Dearest Uncle John and family, 
Your family is entwined in some of my earliest memories—being at your house when my sister was born, summer days at the beach, and telling old stories at dinner around your family’s table. Uncle John, you always struck me as the strongest yet most gentle of men. I will never be able to look at one of those little neon green plastic men holding the bright orange “slow down” safety sign to passing cars without thinking of you as you were always so quick to remind me to wear my seatbelt and look both ways ;) I loved that about you. You embody exactly what I picture when I read the words of Jesus in Matthew when He says, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” You demonstrated such consistent joy and love towards your family—a true servant, putting the needs of your loved ones above your own <3 I remember how you spread your Christmas presents out for days, only opening a couple every day. Having a family of my own now, I completely understand—it was about being with your family that mattered to you most. I now spread my own gifts out over many days ;) Thank you, Uncle John, for telling my dad about Jesus and encouraging my parents in their faith. Over the last year of your life, through all your suffering, I thought many times back to that—where would I be if you hadn’t been such a light to my parents? Where would my own little family be? I know that you are well and whole with your Savior, no longer singing songs about Him but TO HIM, and that your time in Heaven has been filled with reuniting with friends, family, and people you didn’t even know whose lives were changed by you being a light to them. Your crown is so full of jewels and I am one who is incredibly thankful to you. I have loved watching you enjoy your wife and kids and grandkids—watched a life filled with laughter and love.  I am so very glad you are healthy and whole but  the promise of heaven doesn’t remove the pain of this world. You are missed every day, Uncle John <3

Pat, Jonathan, Heather, grandchildren and all of the family!  John was a man who was deeply loved by so many and respected by all who knew him.  He and my late-husband were the best of friends and he was there for Mike so many times during his issues with heart disease.  Mike loved having him around and I appreciated his help so much.   Mike and john shared the comaradie of NYPD and army veterans although Mike never served in Nam but his twin brother did.  They truly had a very special brotherhood.  When Mike went on to glory in 2014 John was a true friend to me.  I will never forget him.  The love that he and Pat shared was so special and very few in life find that depth of love, but they did.  It’s going to be rough for Pat to navigate without him but she will with The Lords help.  God bless and comfort you all as I am sure Je will.  I love you all dearly

I can’t begin to describe how much I miss you. Some days it is completely overwhelming. The world is such a different, less magical place without you in it. 

The thing that strikes me is how you so humbly and quietly impacted so many people. Everyone who remembers you, recalls your warmth and the way you showed them Jesus. I am so proud to be your daughter. Your life and legacy make me want to be better, everyday. 

I don’t think my heart will ever stop hurting over losing you. I ask Jesus to tell you how much I love and miss you, when I pray.
 
I picture you walking around your farm, just the way you described how “your heaven” would look.

Uncle John, I was so sorry to hear of your passing.  My earliest memories are of swimming at your house in Deer Park.  You were always so patient and kind to all of us, and I always admired yours and Aunt Pat's relationship, you both adored each other.  Your kind disposition lives on in your children and grandchildren.  We were all blessed to have you in our lives.  I wish you eternal peace.

We miss you, John, my wonderful brother-in-law.  At first you were a kid in the neighborhood, friendly with my dear sister Patricia.  Soon my brothers and I became your friend, and later we became closer, even to the point that you were one of our best men when we married, or we were honored by being yours.  And as our families became closer we spent vacations together and valued your closeness and caring manner.  As short as this life is, we were blessed to have you in our lives and sharing good and bad times, and always patiently trying to help us through whatever we had to overcome.  You've been a great brother-in-law and a real asset to our family. Thank you John, and rest in peace, God bless you, Bob Edwards

My Uncle John ALWAYS made me feel special and loved, but most importantly, he always made me laugh.  As a little girl, I loved going to my Aunt & Uncles house - I remember getting to play Nintendo and the nostalgic smell of your “Rustic Road” home.  As I got older, I appreciated the wisdom of you, Uncle John.  When I would visit you in Florida, I loved sitting around your dining room table and hearing stories of what it was like growing up in Brooklyn, meeting my Aunt when you were a teenager, and hanging out at the “Edwards home.”  Although you were one of the funniest people I know and when I close my eyes, I can still hear your laugh, I will never forget how you always pointed me to Jesus.  Thank you for being an amazing Uncle, but most importantly, thank you for sharing the love of Jesus with my Dad and Mom.  We all miss you down here, but we know you are in a better place where you are singing and have no more pain.  Save me a seat next to you!

To my Love     Happy Thanksgiving I know how much you were looking forward to a Turkey dinner for Thanksgiving I hope you are having the most scrumptious turkey dinner with our baby, yours and my parents, all of our family and friends and most important Jesus!!!!! John, you were a gentle and a kind man who always had a smile and a mint.  The love your family and friends have for you is evident and it’s because of the special person you were and the impact you had on their lives.  

I’ll always remember the dinners you, Pat, Michael and I shared. You and Michael would talk on and on about end times.  Oh, how I wish I had listened more closely as we are now approaching that time.   

 I know you are in the glorious presence of our Lord Jesus, and I’m reminded of this,  “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge will award me on that day…”. I’ll see you again one day, my friend.

Never did we leave the table without having  laughed so hard that at times, it brought tears.😊
We also never left the table without having spoken about how good God is and how faithful he has always been and always will be.
I have no doubt that John and Al are rejoicing together in the Lord Jesus Christ.🙏

John thank you for being a great friend and a great brother in law, I always looked forward to my Florida trips , going to dinner, hanging out and just spending time with you and Patt. You always were upbeat even when I knew you were struggling physically. You uplifted us, when most people would  be feeling sorry for themselves, you never complained or said "why me".  You were a true Christian gentleman, and always faithful to share the Lord with people, Thank you for your faithfulness and for leading me to Jesus, the best gift anyone could ever give or receive. I will see you again brother, Love Frank. 

Dear Pat, Jonathan, Heather & family, it is hard to put into words how the Lord used John in my early years of ministry.He was a constant source of strength and encouragement to me on the Smithtown Christian School Board.  Together with Pat, he conducted many admissions interviews for the school and was always there for us when we needed Godly counsel regarding many a difficult decision that came before the School Board.I can still picture his smiling face showing up for the meetings with a big bag of candy for everyone to share. Our "meetings after the meetings" at the Hauppauge Diner along with Pastor Greco, Bob Conti and Bill Featherstone produced a treasure trove of laughter and memories that I will keep forever.  John was "all-in" in his service to the school and our daughter the other day recalled when he and Pat made the trip to the ACSI convention years ago. We were all blessed to know John and because of our accepting the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus on the cross as our ticket to eternal life, I will see John again as we rejoice in the presence of our Lord and Savior!!

Dear 'Uncle' John,
  There are so many thoughts; so many emotions; so many memories that come flooding back...
  Most importantly, beyond all of these, a few truths remain...
  Your witness for the Lord has impacted so many of us who remain. This is one part of your legacy and now, because of your faithfulness, generations will continue as a result of the Lord's Promise.
  You have set a high bar in how to deal with adversity with your total faith in the steadfastness of the Lord. You have shown each of us how to "soldier on" with grace.
  Your sense of humor, your kindness, your words of encouragement, your acceptance and your unconditional love will live on in our hearts until the end of our days.
  Although you have left us, you can rest assured that your memory will bless each of us ... forever. We are not without hope, for we know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you will be among the crowd of witnesses that will be cheering us on as we emerge from the tunnel into the glorious light of His Presence!
  We are jewels in your heavenly crown and for that, we are eternally grateful. We are who we are because of who you were!

John, not only have I been lucky to have had you in my life, but I am Blessed to call you my brother. One of my earliest memories was when I was 5 years old, coming down the stairs into the kitchen where you told me that you and Pat were making me play hooky and taking me to the 1965 World’s Fair. It’s a memory that I have and will, always cherish. You’ve been an immeasurable example of the kind, loving, man of faith that I strive to be. I will always be grateful for your anecdotes over the years guiding me on my road to Jesus and through our conversations and your graceful gentle teachings, I know that I will see you again.

Dear Poppy, I love you more than anyone in the world. You taught me more than words can even describe. I won’t ever forget you. Unforgettable is the exact word to describe you Pop. You are the most amazing man i’ve ever met. I’ll forever miss our car rides to school and playing with our batman toys. One of my favorite memories with you is to stop at the hot dog stand righ off LIE in DeerPark during work. We love them dirty water dogs with sauerkraut. You always bust out laughing when I say this to you. YOU GO NOW. YOU BEEN HERE FOR 4 HOURS. YOU EAT VEGETABLES.

Dear Pat and family - although distance has kept us from being together, we have always felt the love and friendship we have shared from Brooklyn to Kings Park, to Florida back to Long Island  and then back to Florida. I remember well happy days we shared - remember playing Risk!! I was always  bad at that game. John and Joe were so competitive!! Games lasted for hours and hours. Spending fun days in kings park - helping out when Heather was born - John cleaning up after me…. Felix!! Many evenings over cups of tea, or sometimes Mateus  Rose!!  Lol. You and John had such a special relationship with Joe’s parents. They loved you both so much!!  I am sure they are a part of John’s welcoming committee in heaven.  We were both so happy to see you and John when we visited a few years ago.  John and Joe shared a special  relationship not only  as brothers in blue but friends from teen years to senior citizens. We love you Pat and our memories of love and friendship will remain in our hearts always. 

Pat- So very sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you, and your family.

I met John and Pat about three days after I moved here from Vermont. And spent many days in their home caring for John. 
     John and I had numerous conversations about his children, grandchildren. And about the love he had for his wife Pat.  I was amazed to see the love that they had in their home.  The love they had for their children. Family and faith. 
     John and I used to take weekly trips to Publix to help Pat with her shopping. He always wanted to help her. And care for her. 
     Thank you John. For making me realize, that there is indeed faith and love in this world. Thank you John and Patricia for showing me faith and love in this world. And for welcoming me into your family with open arms. 
     I will miss you. 

We have been blessed as a family to have had John in our lives. We always looked up to him as a man of God, a great husband and father and a true example of love and kindness and the type of person you want to model your life after.  Our earliest memory was when Diane was in labor with our first son and the hospital wouldn’t admit her as they said she wasn’t ready yet. With our home to far away, the closest place for us to go was to John and Pat’s home. I didn’t realize it at the time as Pat warmed up a nice steak dinner, as John was pacing nervously around the house every so often checking on Diane and hinting that maybe we should head back to the hospital. Not to worry, we made it to the hospital on time, but we’ll always remember how we always felt welcomed and loved in their home, and where else could you show up unexpectedly and get a steak dinner! We’ll always love you  Mr. T ( John,) and thank you for always welcoming our family as your own. 
 “ How are things D?” That how he always called me.  We both had good sense of humors so there  was always good laughs.  
Until we meet again… Mr. T or Grandpa T to all 6 of  our kids.  We truly were  blessed to have had  you in our lives! 


My memory of John was one that was a lifetime ago. We came to your house in Long Island for dinner. After dinner you told us stories from the Bible, stories I heard before, but the way you told them made me listen harder. I always admired that about you, and appreciated the words you spoke and how much more interesting you made everything sound. Rest In Peace John. I was happy to have known you🙏🏼

Dear Pat and Family,
John will be remembered as a real gentleman. A man who loved the Lord, and was always a joy to be around.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you! Our hope is that we will all be together one day!

Poppy, 

How lucky are we to have someone who makes saying goodbye so hard. Not many people get to to experience someone as great as you in their life, and as much as it hurts... I'm eternally grateful that I was one of the few. 
I have too many memories to condense into a post, (you were good at making lasting memories, Poppy) but this is one of my favorites. 

I was always a nervous kid, about anything and everything. Instead of wishing me luck or watching from afar - you got up close. After all, that's what you were good at. You took me for walks early in the morning and told me that sometimes "You just gotta walk and talk it out." I remember how special you made me feel Pop. To this day I still find myself pacing and repeating to myself "I just gotta walk it out." Even when you're gone your voice still feels so clear. 
As we were walking you told me a story of you as a young boy, you said sometimes you would be sad or overwhelmed and you would go find a mirror and smile at yourself. 
I've caught myself doing that a lot recently Pop. 

I will forever be your Darlin', you will forever be my Mookie Head, your tall tales will always be greater than any story ever told, your BLTs will always be the yummiest ever, (even though I usually just ate the bacon and toast haha!) and Yours and Mimi's love will always be so strong for us. 

This legacy you left is larger than life. 

Pop, because you chose to fall in love with Jesus and live your life for him - so do we. You left us with the most priceless and beautiful gift of all, hope and a strong love for the Lord.

Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

My husband, my love, my heart, my hero, my champion, my protector, my safe place. To me you were all of these things and more, you were my gift from the LORD, You always put me first, after Jesus , our precious Lord and Savior. You were a man of great integrity, your steadfastness and faith in Jesus never wavered. You sufferred terribly for so many years and never once questioned why. The way you sufferred this past week was terrible to watch and I felt so helpless couldn’t have survived without GOD carrying me through. The hardest thing was telling you to go, how will I live without you?

One of my favorite memories with my dad is from when I was a teenager and my boyfriend broke up with me.  It was around the time I was learning how to drive. My dad knew how brokenhearted I was and he would take me "driving" and let me drive past the boy's house. He would listen to me talk about how upset I was and he would comfort me.  He also shared some of his own heart breaks with me. My dad made time to do this with me a few nights a week for a couple of months. 

This is a prime example of my dad's heart for me. He always made me feel important, loved, seen, and understood. 
My dad has always been my soft place to fall. I am so grateful to have been loved by him.  

The most important thing I will always remember about him is the way he lived his life for Jesus. He was consistently faithful and a true reflection of Jesus to all those around him. He continually strived to keep his eyes on eternal matters. I am also grateful for his example of this, because now more than ever we need to keep our eyes towards heaven, knowing we will all be together again soon. 

I will miss you everyday dad, I love you to the moon and back xoxo

My father was the greatest man that I have ever known. His integrity was unmatchable. His faith was unbreakable. His love was without ceasing. He also loved the Lord with all that he had. He taught me how to be a man and father by being a living testimony and example. As if that was not enough, he was also a great friend.
Dad, thank you for being so wonderful! You fought the good fight, and finished the race! I am so proud and humbled to be your son!
We will love and miss you always until we meet again!
John 14:1-6

John and I met at work in 1989 and became fast friends. He was an easy going, wonderful person who was always smiling. In the mid 90's I began riding motorcycles. John wanted to as well. He and I rode together to ice cream shops on the other end of the island or to grab a quick bite. His back injury ended up not allowing him to ride as much as he had wanted, but he enjoyed himself when he did. He was always great to have around and he had a good sense of humor. We had a lot of laughs together and he was a real man; a genuine salt of the earth individual. The world is less of a good place without him in it. I know I'll miss him forever. God blessed us with his presence and blessed me with John's friendship.
