George C. Chandlee

George Cheston Chandlee, age 89, born May 17, 1924, Philadelphia, PA, passed peacefully on the afternoon of May 25, 2013. Raised in Dunmore, PA, he graduated from the University of Scranton, and earned his MS in bacteriology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Mr. Chandlee served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a medical technician in New Guinea and the Philippines, earning a Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement, along with numerous other citations. He subsequently served in the U.S. Air Force as a reservist from 1950 through 1978, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was an active member of the Calusa Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, having served for several years as Vice President.

He married Gladys Ann Smith, Scranton, PA, in 1949, and lived in Belleville, IL, San Marcos, TX, and Frederick, MD, before moving his young family to East Brunswick, NJ, in 1960. He worked as a microbiologist at Carter Wallace, and University Laboratories, retiring in 1984 to Cape Coral, FL.

Mr. Chandlee handed down the tradition of his lineage to his children, Pax Et Copia. He maintained an active interest in early American clocks manufactured by his Chandlee ancestors. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed extensive traveling, and had a love of the natural world.

He is predeceased by parents Oliver and Bertha Chandlee; first wife and mother of his children, Gladys Chandlee; second wife, Alexandra Czaplicki; sisters Olive Rummerfield and Audrey Dougher. He leaves behind to cherish his memory children George, Clark, Joel (Mary), Kim (Edmund) McCabe, and Tammy (Bruce) Pappas; grandchildren Mark, Sarah, Anna, and Gabrielle; great-grandchild Aiden; brother Bruce Chandlee; sister Ruth Pastor; special friend Helen McClary, and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church on Friday, May 31st at 10:00 AM. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope Hospice.
