Francis Michael Mullen, Jr., brought into this world in July 1946 by Francis and Rose Mullen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2024 in Cape Coral, Florida. He lived a life dedicated to community service, enlisting in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and completing two combat tours in Vietnam. He remained on active duty until 1971 when he transferred to the U.S. Naval Reserves and retired in 1995 as a Master Chief. “Mike”, as he was affectionally called by friends and family, worked for Verizon for over 30 years. During this time he earned his Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration from Eastern College, having been the first in his family to attain this achievement. After his retirement from Verizon, he drove a school bus for two local school districts. A devout Catholic, he became an active member of the Secular Franciscan Order while living in Pennsylvania and worked closely with the Saint Francis Inn of the Kensington section of Philadelphia prior to moving to Cape Coral in 2012. Once settled, Mike joined the Cape Coral Police Volunteer Unit, supporting law enforcement efforts both on the road and on the open water (once a Sailor, always a Sailor).
Mike is survived by his wife Mary of 53 years, daughters Patricia (with husband Rick) and Barbara (with husband Christopher), and two amazing granddaughters (Emily and Audrey). He was preceded in death by his parents Francis and Rose, brothers Richard and Joseph, and sister Mary.
Mass will be held on Friday, February 16th at Saint Katharine Drexel Church in Cape Coral at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Francis Inn at the following address: St Francis Inn Ministries, PO Box 3746, Philadelphia PA 19125-0746.
