Verta Faye Gentry

Verta passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 28, 2023 in Canton, Texas. She was born on January 21, 1940 in Sayre, Oklahoma to Edgar Cornelius Carlisle and Maude Ethel Jernigan Carlisle.

Verta grew up in Sayre, OK then lived in Kansas with the family finally settling in California to farm. It was in California she met and married her one true love, Dave Leroy Gentry. The couple had almost 65 years together at his passing. Together they brought the word of God to the people, him as a pastor and Verta as the devoted wife of a minister; and a witness of the Lord’s love. Verta was a caregiver to many and enjoyed hosting people at her home. She was quiet soft spoken woman who enjoyed baking and cooking for family and friends. Verta’s biggest joy was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for her “excellent hugs” and being a loving, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Verta’s memory and love will live on in the hearts of those that knew and loved her. Verta enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading and spending time with family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Maude Carlisle; beloved husband, Dave Gentry; sister, Frances Carlisle Ward; brother, Glen I. Carlisle.

Those left to cherish her memory; children, John and Barbara Gentry, David Paul Gentry and Barbara Elliott (Sonny Johnson); grandchildren, Jenny Lynn and Scott Sumner, Kayla Marie and Chad Todd, Danny Ryan and Jessica Gentry; step-grandchild, Razonia McClellan; great-grandchildren, Mandie Joyce Gentry, Sarah Elizabeth Todd; step-great-grandchildren, Tyler Todd, Trinity Todd, Kenedi Ferrell-Todd, Ryker Farrar; step-great-great-grandchild, Jett Moore; sister, Barbara Carlisle; brothers, Herman Dale and Carol Carlisle, Roy and Kathy Carlisle; host of nieces and nephews; and many friends.

A visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. prior to the funeral service on March 6, 2023.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, March 6, 2023 at Arledge Ridge Cemetery in Bonham, Texas.
