He is survived by his children David, Rachel, and Daniel with their spouses, brother Robert Sandberg, grandchildren Chelsea, Nicholas, Emily and Steven, and extended family and friends.
Dick possessed so many talents, it’s difficult to conceive how he would’ve liked to be remembered. His many titles include artist, mountaineer, actor, teacher, photographer, collector, and veteran. His most important title, however, was “Dad”, saying that his children were his greatest pride of all.
He grew up in Mattapan where his father encouraged him to study art. Dick was drafted into the Army where he served entertaining troops as an actor and set builder. He played 50 shows across Germany and France including at the American Embassy in Paris and the Opera House in Munich.
After his service, he attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, where he met his late wife, Susanne, with whom he would start his family. He produced art throughout his entire life and was featured in several shows. Dick started teaching in 1959, a career that would last 35 years. Dick and Susanne moved to Lexington in 1961 and raised their three children: David, Rachel and Daniel.
In later life, Dick took up mountain climbing and achieved an impressive hiking record. He climbed the New England 100 highest peaks and all 48 New Hampshire 4,000’ footers at least once. In Nepal, ascended Mt. Everest, reaching Base Camp I. He climbed New England’s highest peak, Mt. Washington, for the 15th and last time at age 84.
Dick’s legacy will forever be a blessing. He is remembered as being loving, diligent, expressive, humble, and concise— always able to create lots of laughter with only a few words. His loved ones will continue to honor him by appreciating art, spending time in the outdoors, and sharing good food and laughter.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 23rd at 10:00 AM at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington Street, Canton, followed by burial at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon.
Shiva will be observed on Thursday following burial at the home of his daughter, Rachel MacMaster.
