It is with heavy hearts that we announce the recent passing of Walter. Following a wonderful seven week trip to France this Fall, Walter was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer which he succumbed to within a couple of weeks.
Walter grew up in North Vancouver where he met and married Karen, they moved to Brackendale, and then to Campbell River, BC.
He got involved in playing soccer at a very early age, won the BC provincials in grade 12, continued to play men’s soccer, then moved on to coach his boys when they were younger. Walter loved camping, including a few rums around the campfire, and gamely participated in the annual themed fathers’ day camping weekends wearing whatever his wife would create for him. As a true Canucks fan, Walter always kept hope that his team would win the Stanley Cup.
Walter was born to do accounting and used any reason to create a spreadsheet. He worked full-time while putting himself through school for his accounting degree. He progressed from working in a movie-payroll company in North Vancouver, to financial controller in Campbell River. Walter thoroughly enjoyed his early retirement, loved his coffee, a good book and a soak in the hot tub, as well as any excuse for a road trip.
Walter is survived by his wife, Karen, his sons, Nicholas, Christopher and Jack, his sisters Barbara (& Greg) Mercer, and Brenda (& Bruce) Laidlaw, brother-in-law Kevin (& Michelle) McGowan, and nieces/nephews Alycia, Steven, Sean, Amy, Carson, Ford, Katie, Tyler & Jonny, plus his many friends both near and far.
Christmas was Walter’s favourite time of year. Keep your heart joyful for the season and embrace the time you have with family and friends. Walter would not want to be the cause of sadness at this time of year.
An informal celebration of life gathering will be held on Saturday, January 4th, 2025, between 1:00-3:00 pm, at the Eagles Hall in Campbell River. If desired, a memorial donation may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.
