Born June 12, 1948. Died Dec 29, 2020
Sue was the first of five children born to Elliott and Nell Henderson. She grew up happily in Vancouver BC, attending Eric Hamber Secondary. She got her education degree at UBC and moved to Tahsis in 1970 to teach elementary school. She met Frank Shelley there and they married in 1972. In 1979 they moved to Port McNeill and became strong contributors to the North Island community. Their daughter Diane was born in 1983.
Sue taught (mostly) kindergarten to generations of kids in the North Island. Sue was a very gifted and devoted teacher who loved her kids, and they loved her back. She was passionate about reading to children, including after her retirement when she was “Mother Goose”, reading stories in school. Sue was an enthusiastic Lioness with Lion hubby Frank, and was a dedicated volunteer, including at her beloved Port McNeill Baptist Church where she taught the kids of Awana Club.
Sue was a wonderful big sister to her four younger brothers. She much enjoyed her many cousins, aunts and uncles, nephews and nieces, and would visit them whenever she could, along with annual visits to the family campground at Peter Hope Lake, enjoying campfires, card games, and Scrabble with family. Sue and Diane were as close as could be.
Sue triumphed over adversity in her life including frail health since her early fifties, and declining memory in recent years. Nothing daunted her, and her radiant smile lit up her surroundings. In times of trouble, she would always “give it to God” who sustained her in every way. She glowed with Jesus’ love. Sue died suddenly and peacefully in Campbell River. She is survived by husband Frank in Port McNeill, daughter Diane in Campbell River, and her four brothers.
