Alison Hastings MacDowell, 94, of Country Meadows, Mechanicsburg, formerly of King of Prussia, PA, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Country Meadows. She was born January 25, 1923 in Hartford, Connecticut. Alison was the daughter of the late Robert and Martha (Horsey) Hastings. She grew up in West Hartford and Hampton, Connecticut with her parents and her three brothers, Bob, Hank, and Bill. In school she was known for her infectious laugh and sense of humor.
Alison graduated from Connecticut College in 1945 and went on to teach kindergarten and nursery school teacher for more than 30 years.
She is predeceased by her husband, Robert C. MacDowell. They were happily married for 54 years. Alison is survived by her son, Charles Cleveland MacDowell of Shenandoah, PA, her daughter, Martha MacDowell Groene and her husband J. Scott Groene of Mechanicsburg, PA, her grandsons, Ryan P. Groene and Benjamin J. Groene, and two brothers, Henry Hastings of North Carolina, and William Hastings and his wife, Virginia of Meriden, CT.
Besides teaching, Alison enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and going to antique stores, flea markets, and thrift shops. She had many collections over the years including salt and pepper shakers, dolls, and, in her later life, teddy bears. Alison always had a smile to brighten someone's day. She will be greatly missed by her friends, wonderful caregivers, and family. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at Country Meadows, Mechanicsburg.
