Surrounded by his family and their love at Lisaard House, Cambridge. Originally from the Mount Forest area, Ross and his loving wife Marilyn recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. Ross was the proud father of Heather (David) of Simcoe and Lori (Ian) of Port Coquitlam, B.C. and Grandpa of Eric, Scott, Ryan and Jacob. The only child of Belle and Percival Armstrong, Ross was like a son and brother to Marilyn’s family; Lawrence and Evelyn Smith, Shirley (Doug), Joanne (Frank) and Elaine. Ross was predeceased by his parents, his father-in-law, and his infant niece, Lisa (Dec. 5, 1989). He was lovingly guarded until the end, by his “kid in the fur coat,” Maggie.
Ross was a creative visionary, the ultimate recycler and a champion of the underdog. He began his education and then his career in a one room schoolhouse. He taught briefly at Central Public School and then spent 32 years in the Industrial Arts room at William G. Davis. Under his guidance, thousands of students were introduced to success in school and life beyond the basics of the Three Rs.
Ross was an active member of Trillium United Church, on the Presbytery and the Property and Finance Committees for many years. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of St. Peter’s Place.
Ross was blessed to enjoy a long and healthy retirement. During his recent “buggerment,” he was surrounded by care and compassion at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, back at home, with the support of family, friends, neighbours, C.C.A.C, ParaMed and CarePartners, and finally at Lisaard House. Each individual who cared for us as a family is remembered with sincere gratitude.
In keeping with Ross’ wishes, cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends are invited to share memories of Ross at Barthel Funeral Home, 566 Queenston Road, Cambridge from 2-4 and 7-9 on Wednesday, December 10th. A memorial celebration of Ross’ life will take place at Trillium United Church, 450 King Street East, Cambridge on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 11 a.m., Reverend Mark Rutledge officiating. Ross requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital (Trees of Caring), Lisaard House, Canadian Cancer Society or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
